HIGHER PETROL TAX?

A.A.A.’S SUSPICIONS AUCKLAND MOTORISTS MEET '“Unless we keep an eye on matters we will find that the petrol tax will be increased,” was a remark made at the Auckland Automobile Association last evening- when the association was advised that it was proposed to have a conference on motor taxation. The Minister of Public Works will convene the conference, and the Auckland association will press for representation. The fact that local bodies were not liable for damage resulting from defects in roads was mentioned in a communication from the North Island Motor Union. It was stated that motorists should report danger spots to the local authority, who would then be liable if steps were not taken to issue warning. A suggestion for shortening the route to Helensville by about 1£ miles was received from a member. It was pointed out that a deviation could be made following along the north-west-ern side of the railway from Ohirangi station to a point near the Helensville saleyards. where the railway would be crossed. The correspondent stated that the greater part of the deviation would be through property which would be offered free. It was resolved to bring the scheme under the notice of the local body. It was decided to recommend the City Council to make an experiment with white lines in lieu of the traffic dome at the intersection of Broadway and the Great South Road. The Main Highways Board intimated that a tour of the East Coast districts would be made from November 23 until December 4. A record in monthly membership additions was announced, a total of 419 being elected. The association has now nearly 8,500 members. The association decided to press for the opening of the Exhibition Drive in the Waitakeres which was contributed to largely by motorists, and is stated to require little work to make available.
