KILLED IN COAL FALL
MINING PRESIDENT j ACCIDENT AT BLACKBALL Press Association. GREYMOUTH, Tuesday. An accident resulting in the death ! of Mr. Harry Chilton, president of the j Miners’ Union, occurred in the Black- 1 ball Mine at 8 a.m. to-day, when de- ! ceased, with three mates, was working at the face. A popper drill was being worked by deceased and T. Leitch, and the noise of the machine prevented their hearing the strata move on the roof. About three tons of coal fell, pinning Mr. Chilton against the drill and throwing his companion down iust clear. Another miner, A. McClure, was slightly injured. A fourth man. McDonald, extricated Ueiteh, but two hours were taken in getting Chilton out. He died five hours later. Deceased took a. leading part in Blackball activities. He was 53 years ; of age and a native of Staffordshire, England. He had been 21 years in New Zealand and leaves a and two married daughters.
