MR. FLETCHER CHEERED
THREE QUIET MEETINGS Great ovations were given Mr. J. S. Fletcher. United Party candidate for Grey Lynn, last evening, when he addressed three meetings. Mr. Fletcher made his final appeals at the Point Chevalier Hall, the Grey Lynn Library and the Adelphi Theatre, Grey Lynn terminus. At Point Chevalier the candidate had a quiet meeting, and after speaking for a few minutes, he asked for questions, but none were forthcoming. The chairman, Mr. W. J. McMillan, remarked that it looked as if the electors had only come to look at their future member. A Voice: I did. He doesn’t look much. Later the same interjector asked if the candidate had the Ability to carry on. The chairman said Mr. Fletcher could not very well answer the question himself, so he answered for the candidate. He invoked a storm of personalities from the interjector. Later the candidate answered a number of questions and on leaving the hall was cheered. The meeting at the Grey Lynn Library was also quiet. Mr. Fletcher being cheered at the close. Mr. A. C. Sexton presided. The concluding meeting at the Adelphi Theatre was also quiet until question time, when the candidate was bombarded with questions. Asked how he w’ouid vote on a noconfidence motion, the candidate said he w’ouid vote with Labour against Reform and with Reform against Labour. A Voice: Muchy-muehy. A persistent interjector moved a vote of no-confidenee, and was greeted with laughter. “You will notice our Labour friends are getting in bright and early. They have no more questions to ask,” said the candidate. Later an interjector (party uncertain) said: We’ll be at the top of the poll to-morrow. Another Voice: Yes, if you’re turned upside down. When Mr. Fletcher rose at the close of the meeting he was again cheered. A voice called for cheers for Labour, and both cheers and boos followed. Dr. R. M. Beattie presided.
