BUS ON FIRE

PANIC AMONG CHILDREN DRIVER’S PROMPT ACTION Through the prompt action of the driver in using the fire-ex-tinguisher, a serious accident was averted yesterday afternoon when the Blue Star bus was conveying about 30 schoolchildren from the Northcote School to their home at Birkdale. The bus, which was driven by Mr. Barker, manager of the companv, was travelling up Onewa Road, Birkenhead, when the engine back-fired, causing benzine to catch fire underneath the bus. Mr. Barker promptly backed the bus down the hill, away from the burning benzine, and extinguished the fire with a fire-ex-tinguisher. The children got into a panic, and scrambled out through the windows on to the road, though no one was hurt. The children were later conveyed home in another bus. One boy remained very cool and seized one of the two extinguishers carried on the bus and played it on the fire. The damage to the bus was slight.
