Mr. T. W. Rhodes. M.P-, returned from Wellington by the Limited this morning. The Hon. Vernon Reed. M.L.C., left for Wellington by the Limited last evening. Major Forest Lindsay arrived in Auckland this morning by the Limited from Wellington. Captain T. J. Watts, of the Wellington Fire Brigade, arrived in Auckland this morning on holiday. Mr. O. O. Thornton, resident engineer, Public Works Department, Paeroa, has been promoted district engineer at Gisborne. Mi*. W. A. Marshall, railway goods agent, Wellington, arrived in Auckland to-day on his way to Rotorua on holiday. Mr. D. Brown, B.Sc., of Leeds University, has been appointed lecturer in physics at the Auckland University College. Miss Florence Hamer, the present holder of the Sanders Memorial Scholarship, has resigned her claim in order to enter the teachers’ training college. Mr. W. T. Neill, Surveyor-General, and Mr. R. B. Hammond, formerly director of town-planning, are visiting Auckland to inspect the Orakei garden suburb. Mr. Justice Smith will leave Auckland at the end of the week to open next Tuesday the Supreme Court sittings at Palmerston North. It is thought probable that Mr. Justice Fraser will take his place on the Auckland Bench. Mr. W. R. McGregor, lecturer in zoology at the Auckland University College, left last week to visit the Western Pacific for the purpose Qf collecting specimens. At yesterday’s meeting of the college council he was granted leave of absence until the end of the first term next year. Mr. L. B. Campbell, district engineer, Public Works Department, Auckland, has received notice of his promotion to the position of inspecting engineer, Wellington, and will leave to take up his new duties early in the New Year.
