STORM IN CANTERBURY
MANY TREES UPROOTED THREE YACHTS CAPSIZED (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. One of the worst storms experienced in Christchurch for many years broke over the city about 4 p.m. yesterday. Rain and hail fell in heavy showers, amid flashes of lightning and claps of thunder. The wind blew down many trees in the suburbs. The galvanised iron roof of a shed in Riccarton was lifted off and hurled across a road, missing a motor-car by a few inches. North Canterbury suffered considerably, trees being blown down and elee-tric-power In the Fernside and Flaxton districts cut off until a late hour. Many hundreds of picnickers received a soaking, and there was some anxiety felt for two launches and a yacht which were caught in the squall, but they weathered it safely. In the estuary, however, three yachts capsized.
