N.Z. Breweries Rising
Waihi Mining Firm
(By “Noon Call.") THE market on ’C-hange opened for the week this morning with a sustained firm demand for all the popular securities. New Zeulaud Breweries, on the eve of the referendum. are particularly firm, sales being made at a price which shows a return. based on the latest dividend, of approximately £3 85 9d per cent.
Sellers of English. Scottish and Australian Banks came In again this morning at £ 8 18s, but failed to find support. In the search for high-class securities showing a reasonable yield with prospects, these shares should not l*o overlooked. An interesting point in connection with the scrip is the approaching redemption out of revenue of the 4'j per cent deferred inscribed deposit stock. For this purpose the bank has set aside each year 25 per cent, of the amount available #*r dividend. and the process now gone so far as to make* it probable that, by the beginning of next year, this charge on the bank’s profits will have entirely disappeared. This will mean higher returns for shareholders later on.
N.Z. Breweries are one of the star •securities at the moment, and the scrip is receiving increased attention as the date of the dividend approaches. The scrip moved up 3d to 38s 3d during the morning, lea\'ing a market very firm <at mid-day, with buyers still offering 5Ss. The demand is coming from those anticipating a favourable decision for
the liquor people, but even this does not justify the present price, which is higher than that for the best insurance scrip. Insurances are stable, and their balance-sheets show projects of future increased pay-outs to shareholders. This is more than the N.Z. Breweries balance-sheet discloses. Viewed from every business angle, the Breweries scrip appears too highly priced.
The list of quoted mining shares weekly gets into shorter compass. Attention at the moment is centred almost entirely on Waihis, Ohinemuris and Mount Lyells. Waihis are still very firm, showing a further advance of Id to 13s lid this morning.

AUCKLAND WOOL SALE
SHEARING HELD UP MARKET PROSPECTS SOUND November 12. 9 a.m. Next week the wool-selling season for New Zealand will commence in earnest. The first sale opens in Wellington on Friday next, to be followed by one at Napier, then Wanganui, and Auck- | land on Monday, November 26. Last year Auckland had a record first sale catalogue, over 23,000 bales | being offered to buyers. Unfavourj able weather conditions over the past nf.ith, however, have held up | shearing operations, and indications j are that even the 192 6 catalogue of I 18,000 bales will not be exceeded this year. The quality of the wool coming for- ; ward is generally reported to be fully , up to that at the first sale of last ■ year. Most brokers report that their | aJtoro receipts are well below those at | the corresponding period of last sea- ) son. while one of the biggest firms has little more than half the wool in store i that it had in at the corresponding ; date of last season. j A wide variety of opinions have been expressed as to what opening : prices will be. Certainly there is nothing to indicate that prices will be | up to those ruling at the close of last I season, but it is quite on the cards that the market will open with competition keen and fairly widespread, on levels little different from those ruling at the opening sales of last year. Owing to the different class of wool dealt with at the Sydney sales, the prices there can only give a very general indication of the trend of values. 1 i ices at the last London sale for wool similar to that which will be offered j 111 New Zealand indicated an opening market for New Zealand of approximately 10 per cent, below last season s opening levels. Since then, however, there has been a decided firming in the demand. An indication of the violent fluctuations in the market, and the futility of making definite forecasts, can be taken trom the following table, showing the average price a lb realised at all sales held m New Zealand during each of tne past six seasons:
