Preparing For The Holiday Fixtures

DOINGS AT TE AROHA INJURY TO VALKON (■Special to THE SUE) ■ TE AROHA, Friday. Venus Abbey, by Quin Abbey— Fetuaoa, owned by Mr. P. Maloney, is now among the local track workers. She is looking especially well, but perhaps a little lusty in condition, but should soon strike form. Up to about five furlongs this mare is speedy, but has yet failed to'stay on. She is to be raced at the Paeroa non-totalisator meeting. Consequent upon wrenching a fetlock joint while competing in the Largaville Cup a few days ago, .Valkon is being given a spell in the paddock for a few weeks, by which time- it is expected that he will have recovered. The mishap occurred at an unfortunate time, as the Valkyrian gelding had just been raced into form. Members of G. A. Reid’s team are now showing improvement, and some of them should be noted on the winning list before long. Lucy Rose is coming to hand more quickly than expected, and boars a very muscular appearance. She is a very genuine track worker. Crown Arch has brightened up considerably during the last fortnight, and is certainly one of the most promising of the locally-trained equines. The Marble Arch gelding, Upoko, who always shows speed on the tracks, has built up nicely, and his efforts under the colours may soon be more consistent with his working essays. The stable apprentice, J. Chandler, is to have his first ride in public at the Paeroa meeting. To Race at Te Kuiti Messrs. Dunn’s Flying Tresses continues to execute satisfactory work, and the soreness that troubled her for a time appears to have been overcome. She is expected to be a contestant at the Te Kuiti meeting, and should certainly run prominently. Belle Star, the most recent addition to J. H. Wallace’s team, is now included among the course visitors, and is settling down to light work very quickly. This Lucullus filly is a tower of strength, and, while executing slow work, moves with a very smooth action. / Queen Arch is being treated to a short respite, but may be racing again soon after the new year. The principal track workers of R. B. Hines's team are Lady Spalpeen and Waltzer, both of which will be competing at early meetings. J. H. Wallace lias Te Koroke looking well. He raced prominently at Cambridge on Labour Day, and will probably do better now that the tracks are not likely to be so heavy. In his work he shows that he has not slipped back as regards pace. Every member df A. E. Cox’s string bears evidence that the’ colours of his several patrons will be carried at the approaching holiday, fixtures. Black Maire is still improving; Ruffles is executing good sprinting tasks; Orchus has the necessary condition to win If. he is good enough; Indolent is galloping well; and Ah Wera bids fair to make a hurdler. The latest addition to the stable, the Wp.irakau-bred Glen Albyn gelding, looks like turning out good, and may prove to be one of the best stayers of the team. Mr. R. Burke’s Gay Comet ie showing capability in his schooling tasks over, the small hurdles. He has plenty of size, is a good weight carrier, with pace, and may become a noteworthy addition to the ranks of cross-country horses. Thursday’s Gallops Yesterday morning’s track work was interesting inasmuch as several candidates engaged at the Te Kuiti and Takapuna meetings were indulged in fast work. Indolent and Black Maire, singly, put in a round on the plough in a resolute manner. Orchus showed more dash than usual over six furlongs. This Quin Abbey gelding carries plenty of racing condition, which will stand to him for the season. Ruffles dashed over three furlongs in 39, and could have made better time. Upoko and Lucy Rose separately traversed a mile on the plough, both moving pleasingly. Every Lay and Ah Wera were sent two rounds over several jumps. The latter gave another fine display, jumping fast and galloping fpeely, while Every Lay, jumping fairly high, was never far away from the leader. These horses are owned by two local business partners, and considerable interest will be evinced in their training at Paeroa. William of Orange and Te Koroke finishing together. Crown Arch and slipped over three furlogs in 39 2-5, Venus Abbey were allotted a half-mile dash. They ran together for nearly three furlongs, when Crown Arch, nicely handled by young Chandler, drew away, and won by three lengths in 51 3-5. Flying Tresses ran six furlongs in 1.20 2-5, finishing strongly. Good working gallops were shown by Waltzer and Lady Spalpeen, while Belle Star moved attractively in slow work.
