AT SIX YEARS OLD They sat side by side on the ferry—a pretty picture of curly locks, bright frocks, and chubby legs.. Two childish voices were raised in discussion. Were they talking of dolls, of “pictures,” or of ice-cream? Not at all! They were discussing the equality of sexes! “Look!” cried Six-years-old. “There’s a man cleaning windows!” “Uh-huh! ” crooned Seven-years-old, calmly. “I didn’t know that men did housework,” pondered Six-years-old, swinging her legs. She was rather amused. “Didn’t you?” drawled Seven-years-old. “Men always do the housework now.” There was a breathless silence. “I saw a picture,” went on the small voice, “of a man washing the dishes, while his wife sat with her feet on the mantelpiece . . . smoking a cigarette.” Seven-years-old smiled. “That’s how it is nowadays,” she ,ended. Woman had given her verdict! It made the startled listener wonder what the future would be, when these dangerous moderns grew up—l92B seems advanced enough. But these tiny females will shake the world up further, when they rule domesticated husbands with an iron hand—in 1950.
-yet, fundamentally, fashion keeps, strictly to the regulations she broadcasts at the opening of each season. Above are four drawings showing fashion in her most varied moods. One is a jumper suit of shaded georgette toning from oyster to deep blue by means of finely pleated tiers which are carried out on skirt and sleeves. The second picture is a period frock of taffeta, with an odd peacock skirt lined at the hack with frills of organdie matching the three circular motifs
