“POLITICAL BRIBERY”
MR. FLETCHER REITERATES CHARGES The so-called denial by the Prime Minister of statements made by Mr. J. S. Fletcher, United candidate for Grey Lynn, was not allowed to pass by the candidate when he spoke last evening. Mr. Fletcher had stated that the promise of Motuihi as a marine park, of the Morningside tunnel, as well as increases in the salaries of certain civil servants, and the ordering of two engines to be built in Thames, amounted to political bribery. Mr. Coates replied that there had been no general increase in civil service wages, only a few having received increases according to earlier decision. The two engines had been ordered 18 months ago. This was termed a denial. Mr. Fletcher said he had signed documents showing that there had been salary increases during the past few days, and that the engines were to bo ordered when plans were complete, so that they could not have been ordered 18* months ago.
