THE BUSINESS IDEA
UNITED PARTY METHODS POLITICAL ALTERNATIVES The United candidate in Auckland East, Mr. J. B. Donald, claims that United Party men wil* go to Parliament with the business »dea. He gives the electors a choice between Reform, representing delay and stagnation; Labour, typifying extremism and disaster; and United, standing for progress and prosperity. Mr. Donald, in speaking to about 300 people at Parnell last evening, referred to what he called the votecatching election promises of the Reform Party, and said the United candidates were secured from every class of the community. It was the party with a policy, and it was the only party with men behind its policy that could carry it through. (Applause.) The United Party was offering men in all parts of New Zealand who could run the Government with business ideas. The railway policy outlined provided for the construction or completion of three main lines. An Auckland-Tara-naki line, he said, should pay 6 or 7 per cent, interest. With this alternative connection, the Main Trunk trains would always get through without trouble. Other paying lines.would be a Marl borough-Lyttelton connection, ! and the Paeroa-Pokeno section. We I were losing to-day on railways as much I us these lines would cost. Dealing with tourist traffic, Mr. Donald said: ‘‘Canada receives £27,000,000 from tourists. We cannot expect that; but we have good scenery, good sport, good climate and many other attractions for tourists. We need a better steamer service. Services today, in some instances, are no faster : than they were 20 years ago. We must also give tourists decent hotel accommodation like that which they are used to in their own countries.” The chairman, Mr. W. A. Beddoe, declared a motion of thanks and confidence in Mr. Donald carried, amid a few loud “noes."
