Wellington Wants an Overseas Swimmer, Too

Supports Auckland Proposal IS CHARLTON RETIRING? (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Wellington officials support the Auckland proposal that an overseas swimmer should be invited to visit the Dominion this year. Nevertheless the Wellington Swimming Association is doubtful whether

the visit of “Boy” Charlton, suggested by the Auckland Swimming Centre, is feasible, since Charlton is said to iiuve retired from the sport. It is considered that arrangements might be made for the swimmer whom the Australian Association is asking to visit the Commonwealth this year to

come on to New Zealand, but it is pointed out that if this is done the man will arrive here late in the season, probably about April. This trouble in arranging visits was one of the reasons for New Zealand severing itself from the Australian Swimming Association.

[With regard to the above, recent reports from Australia are to the effect that Charlton will continue to take part in competitive swimming, uno tn .-••• ney Referee” says there is a possibility of him competing against Crabbe, the American invader. He may not, however, be able to visit New Zealand so soon after his Olympic trip. It maybe mentioned that Bog Grier, who visited Auckland a season or two ago, is again swimming in Queensland.!
