STRAITENED FINANCIALLY

OTAHUHU BOROUGH'S POSITION At last evening’s meeting of ilie Otahuhu Borough Council, an application from Signs, Ltd., for permission to erect a hoarding on the approach of tire Tamaki Bridge was refused. On the motion of the Mayor, the tovvi clerk was instructed to recommend to the applicants that application be made for permission to erect the signs on the quarry site, the rental to be determined by the town clerk. A letter of thanks was received from the Great South Road Beautifying Society for the use of the Council Chambers for the monthly meetings of the society. The council 'will not attend the Armistice Lay church parade, to be held under the auspices of the Otahuhu Returned Soldiers’ Club, in an official capacity. It was agreed that any councillor wishing to attend would do so as a private citizen. In reply to a request from the committee of the Third Auckland Mounted Rifles Band, for a donation toward *he painting of het band room, the Mayor expressed the opinion that the council’s liability should end on the payment of the annual subsidy of £25 to the band’s funds. After a discussion the matter was referred to the Works Committee to report to the next meeting of the council. As the result of a letter from the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, asking the council to endeavour to provide work for the unemployed, it was agreed that on account of the straightened financial position that no action could be taken. The clerk issued a statement showing receipts since April 1 as £9,378 12s Bd, and expenditure as £28,929 12s 4d. showing an overdraft of £19,550 19s Sd.
