COMPLETE DENIAL
ATTENTION AT EPSOM SHELTERS REPLY TO MR. R. B. SPEIRS A report of a speech made by Mr. R. B. Speirs, in which the United Party candidate for Auckland West criticised the management of the Epsom shelters, was replied to by Mr. W. Wallace, chairman of the Hospital Board: ?-t a meeting addressed by Mr. M. J. Savage at Herne Bay :ast night. Dealing with the allegations contained in the report to the effect that the inmates were denied medical attention and drugs, Mr. Wallace said that such a statement was an unwarranted reflection on every member of the board, of which Mr. Savage was a member. Another statement, alleging that suitable food was not procurable, was challenged by Mr. Wallace, who read from the ordinary menu provided. “Mr. Speirs is reported as sayyig that he did not wish to make political capital out of this,” said Mr. Wallace. “Why, then, did he make the attack on an institution in which Mr. Savage is interested as a member of the board of control? “The Government is not to blame, Every member of the board carries a responsibility in connection with the management. It is unfortunate that the matter should have been introduced during a political contest.” A vote of thanks to Mr. Wallace was carried with enthusiasm.
