WINNER AT FLEMINGTON DION BEATS BACCHUS (United P.A. — By Telegraph — Copyright) MELBOURNE. Thursday. The Victoria Racing Club’s spring meeting was continued at Flemington sbm. oaeqi pub •jeqyea.Nv euij ui Atep-o* a good attendance. The English-bred horse Gothic registered an attractive and popular victory in the Linlithgow Stakes. Gothic has only been defeated on one occasion this season in a weight-for-age race. He has now won over £IO.OOO in stakes under the colours of Mr. Sol Green. The fractional times in the Linlithgow Stakes were: First half-mile. 495 sec: last four furlongs, 49isec. In the Carnival Handicap: Last four furlongs, 50isec. Opera Queen was a long way back in the early stages of the contest for the Victoria Oaks, but finished fast, and won nicely. She was bred by her owner. Mr. J. M. Cummings. The time was a race record. The prize to the winner amounted to £1.206. Dion, who always led in the Veteran Stakes, was ridden by the apprentice, C. Phillips, who registered his first riding success. Following are the results: NOVEMBER HURDLE RACE A sweepstakes of £2 each, with £750 added; 2 miles. DISMAL (T. Dismal was last in a well-bunched field early, but led at the last jump, and won nicely by three lengths, six lengths between second and third. Polly Mine was fourth. Time, 5.4*. BYRON MOORE STAKES A sweepstake of £7 each, with £750 added; for two-year-olds; 5 furlongs. VALDENE CM. P. Reid), ch g, by Valais—Cerinthia, 8.7 (Duncan) 1 BEL ROUGE, 8.7 2 ROC, 8.10 3 Seven started. Hard Steel was left at the post. Valdene won in good style. Time, 1.34. Valdene was bought when a yearling for 600 guineas. LINLI: HGOW STAKES A sweepstakes of £lO each, with £1,500 added, weight-for-age; 1 -mile. GOTHIC (S. Green), blk h, 6yrs, by Tracery—Sundrilla, 9.2 (J. Pike) . 1 AMOUNIS, 6yrs, 8.13 2 FOURTH HAND (imp.), 9.2 3 Gothic won by a length and a-half from Amounis, who beat Fourth Hand by a head for second place. Ramulus was fourth. Faircroft was second early, and led into the straight, to win brilliantly by a length and a-half, a length separating the second and third horses. Bombard was fourth. Time, 2.6. Faircroft was previously owned by Mr. Eric Connolly, but is now raced by Mr. J. R. Corteen, who at one time owned Heroic. V.R.C. OAKS STAKES A sweepstakes of £2O each, with £I,OOO added; for three-year-old fillies; li miles. OPERA QUEEN (J. M. Cumming), br f. by Anton King—Opera Bouffe, 8.10 (A. Adams) 1 GAY PRINCESS (H. F. Creswick), ch f, 8.10 (H. Cairns) 2 FERVOUR (A. T. Creswick), br f, 8.10 (A. Reed) 3 Won by half a length, three-quarters of a length between second and third. Lady Kentrel was fourth. Time, 2.354. VETERAN STAKES A sweepstakes of £6 each, with £6OO added; 1J miles. DION (J. A. Murdoch), br g, aged, by Demosthenes —Linaceae, 6.10 (C. Phillips) 1 BACCHUS, 9.0 2 VALAMITA, 9.0 3 Six started. Won by one and a-quarter lengths, a length between second and third. Tookarby was fourth. Time, 2.36*.
