TRAFFIC LICENCE FEES
NEWMARKET’S QUOTA Heavy traffic fees totalling £137 for the quarter ended September 30 were received from the City Council at last evening’s meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council. The Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presided. The Public Works Department wrote advising that there was a movement on foot to induce the board to discontinue the regulation empowering local bodies to charge heavy traffic licence fees, and asking for information regarding the amount of fees received and the damage caused to roads by heavy vehicles. The borough traffic inspector and the town clerk were instructed to draw up a report. The Society for the Protection of Women and Children was granted permission to hold a street collection on November 30. The Southern Cross League was granted permission to hold a collection in aid of unemployed and disabled ex-soldiers in Newmarket, though it was decided to suggest to the society that the appeal should be broadened to cover the whole city.
