Don Pedro’s bann was playing a descriptive piece, “The Battle of the Marne.” composed by Don Pedro, and for the gunfire effect fireworks were let off. One exploded in the face of Mr. W’illiam Hawkins, the stage manager, who was letting them off. His clothing became shreds and his chest, arms and legs were badly burned. The band went on playing, and many in the audience regarded the casualty as part of the performance. One man had a fit and a woman fainted during the performance. Home Manager Appointed Mr Robert J. Byers, housemaster of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, has been appointed manager of the Hamilton Old Men's Home.
