WHANGAREI SPRING MEETING

Trotting at Addington

THE sport of kings is to-day being actively pursued at two centres, with racing at Wliangarei and trotting at Addington. At the northern centre the weather was glorious, there was a large attendance, and the track in excellent order. Results:-

Time, 1.16 4-5. Winner trained by J. W. Cathro at Avondale. A field of nine paraded for the opening event, and easily the best was Mussie, who lost a little ground at the start-and then won easily. Envoy £327 was a firm, favourite, with the next best backed pair—Mussie £ 2u4 and St. Ames £lOU —at nice prices. The start was not good. Envoy and Lucklaine showed out early and they led along the back from Snowdrift, Mussie, ‘Viburnum and Owairaka. With half trie journey covered Lucklaine, Mussie and Owairaka were on terms ahead of the favourite. This was also the order into the straight, and halfway up the running Mussie began to assert herself, finally scoring comfortably by a couple of lengths from Owairaka, who went a good race. A length and a-half back Envoy was third, and then came Lucklaine, St. Ames and Viburnum. The winner did her part well; she is a full sister to Scat. KENSINGTON HACK HANDICAP Of £140; (j turlongs 1— VALLAR (Mrs. M. Smith), ch g, by Valkyram—Beilacity, 4>is, 9,u, R. McTavish i 2 AIR KING, 8.8, A. Tinker 2 9—FROTHBLOWER, 7.0, S. Won by two lengths, a similar distance separating second and third. Time, 1.15. Winner trained by J. Williamson, at Ellerslie. There was a rush to be on Vallar in the hack sprint, and he carried £551. being backed right down to a particularly short price. Of the others. Air King £323 and Abbey Queen £l9l were fairly well supported. Air King and Vallar began smartly, and at the end of a furlong the favourite was in front from Air King, Camp Prince. Abbey Queen and Sulla. This order was practically maintained as the field crossed the top, and at the home turn Vallar was clear of Abbey Queen and Air King, with Sulla and Segment at the head of the remainder. Once in line it was virtually a one-horse race, Vallar winning under a pull by two lengths from Air King, who was the same distance in front of Frothblower, an outsider. Abbey Queen faded into fourth position, and she was followed home by Sulla, Segment and Michael. The winner was a class above his opponents. Dulieu . 3 Also started.—7 Clockwork, 9.11; 2 Wenday, 9.8; 5 Mashoor, 9.3; S Lord Abbey, 9.0; 6 Miss Alma, 9.0. Won by two and a-half lengths, third horse five lengths away. Time, 2.59. Winner trained by owner at Cambridge.

Ripon Abbey was made a warm order in the Hurdles, being entrusted with £551, nearly twice as .much as the next best backed, Wenday £282, with Mangani carrying £230. The favourite early went to the front, leading over the first fence from Lord Abbey, Just Quietly, Clockwork and Mashoor. Passing the stands Ripon Abbey held command a couple of lengths in front of Just Quietlv, with Mangani (pulling hard), Mashoor. Lord Abbey and Clockwork next in order. Down the back the favourite had drawn out six lengths in front of Lord Abbey, Mangani. Mashoor and Just Quietly lying handy, and at the home turn he was still bowling along nicely three lengths ahead of Mangani, with Mashoor and Clockwork next. Ripon Abbey did not have much difficulty in going out to win by two and

a-half lengths from Mangani. Five lengths away was Just Quietly, with Mashoor, Wenday, Miss Alma. Clockwork and Lord Abbey next to cross the line. Nothing had a show of heading the winner. Wenday was unlucky, her rider losing an iron. WHANGAREI GOLD CUP HANDICAP Of £500; II miles 2 DESERT GLOW (D. R. Walker), br g, by Day Comet—Lady Winsome, aged, 7.11, H Lee 1 1-PAPATU (G. WRACKLER’S DERBY KATUTE WINS FIRST (Special to THE SUNJ CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting was continued at Addington to-day in dull weather. The track was in good order and the attendance large. Results: WHITELEIGH HANDICAP Of £300; 3.34 c.lass; ly miles. s—-KATUTE, It 1 3—MAN GOUT U, 36yds 2 2—NELSON BOY, 12yds 3 All started. Won by three lengths. Time, 3.27 4-5. Katute was first away and led down the back from Nelson Boy, Nelson McKinney, Mangoutu and Nourmahal. Katute was still in charge leaving the straight for the last time, and led across the top and into the straight. Holding her own in the run home, she easily beat Mangoutu by three lengths, with Nelson Boy two lengths away third, followed by Nourmahal, Sarsaparilla, Frisco Beau and Nelson McKinney, with Young Carbine last. NEW ZEALAND DERBY Of £1,000; for three-year-olds; 1| miles 1— WRACKLER 1 4—GRAND LIGHT 2 2 MURIEL D’ORO .. .. 3 All started. Won by two lengths. Time, 5.25. Wrackler took up the running down the back and showed the way to Grand Light, Muriel D.’Oro, Sonoma Child and Lindbergh. The same order was maintained going out of the straight for the last time, but turning into the back stretch the field began to close up. Wrackler was still in charge racing across the top. and led into the straight from Grand Light. Muriel D’Oro and Lindbergh. Wrackler defeated Grand Light by a length and a-half, with Muriel D’Oro half a length away third, followed by Lindbergh, Sonoma Child and Tactless.
