FIREMEN ON STRIKE
DISPUTE AT WAIHI TEMPORARY AGREEMENT WAIHI, Wednesay. The contentions in connection with the strike of 11 of the 16 Waihi volunteer firemen, as a protest against the appointment of Mr. S. Shergold as deputy-superintendent, were carried a further stage last night, when a roundtable conference was held. At this conference nine of the dissenting firemen, and the local members of the Waihi Fire Board, were present, and after a long discussion a compromise was arrived at. Mr. Shergold refused to resign at the request of the strikers, contending that as the board had appointed him he would remain in the position until the board asked him to resign. As the nine strikers present would not commit themselves to anything definite in the absence of their mates, things seemed to have reached an impasse, but after some persuasion they consented to attend any fires that might occur during the next month, after which the whole dispute will be considered by a full meeting of the fire board. In the meantime, the firemen will refuse to attend musters or drills, nor will they take orders from the deputysuperintendent. %
