ON THE GREEN

Bowls and Bowlers

By

JACK HIGH

Among the limited few enthusiasts *ho have over worked steadfastly on the administrative side of the game, with the determined object of advancing the sport and establishing it on sounder lines, can be placed Mr. T. j Mclvor. Although confining his efforts solely to the Grey Lynn Club, his work is widely known throughout the length and breadth of the province. Indeed so intimately associated is the name Mclvor with the Grey Lynn Club that when one is-mentioned it brings the other automatically into association, so welded together are they. Commencing bowling in 1912, Mr. Mclvor became runner-up for the championship, champion of the club, president for a term, and in turn secretary for two seasons. But his efforts, in addition to this record of service and bowling ability, have been outstanding in the conducting of one- 1 day tournaments, and it is safe to say that he is widely recognised as the most successful manager of these events in the city. Indeed, it is on record that the Grey Lynn Club netted in as much as £75 from the entries of one of these most popular tournaments. The members of the club are fully appreciative of Mr. Mclvor’s services and value him as an indefatigable worker in the interests of bowling generally and their club in particular. * * • Mr. J. W. Hardley, the manager of the New Zealand bowlers recently on tour, returned home by the Aorangi on Sunday last. In addition to ' ‘ being past president respectively XaT W§® ol the West End SB MM Bowling Club, the Auckland Bowling 'entre and PBlpl 's*7%' Dominion of New iBSSr % inland Bowling WMaS Association. lie H jHHfi; lias further added sjSß' m to the list of offices Hi “ held in Dominion Mr. J. W. Hardley bowling by recently becoming the first New Zealand representative to take his place on the International Bowling Board. Thus it may be said that Mr. Hardley has crowned the most outstanding bowling career on the administrative side of the sport in the Dominion by definitely linking bowling here with an organisation that is now spread throughout the whole of the British Empire, and which will ultimately become . the governing body for the sport throughout that vast area. The importance of Mr. Hardley’s latest work cannot be too highly stressed and the warmest praise is therefore accorded him. * * * Of course, one of the first problems that will be rightly tackled by the newly-formed board is the establishment (and enforcement) of a uniform bias for bowls. This question is of paramount importance, and. must come first in sequence. At the first meeting it was disclosed that each respective governing association had a variation in this respect. In order from minimum to fullest they range: Scottish, English, New Zealand and Australian. As there is more controversy over this question than any other in connection with the sport, it is more than probable that some time will elapse before a definite ruling is ultimately finalised. But the concluding result will be that all bowlers throughout the Empire will start off their games on the green with equal opportunity, which will be in striking contrast to what obtains at » the present time. * * * Another important point is that in future the board will arrange all itinaries of tours. Instead cM the respective associations making their own arrangements there will be one responsible and central body which will undertake this work. The final of the Carlton Club’s Labour Day tournament was played on Saturday, the contesting teams being Isaacs, Elliott, Kilgour, Sneddon and Wicksteed, Brittain, Rowe, Fookes. The game may be rightly characterised as one of the finest expositions of the game that has been seen in this city for some time. The teams were evenly matched, there being little difference between the players on either side. Wicksteed was slightly better on the day than Isaacs, who evidenced a slight nervousness, which mitigated against his usual high standard of drawing. Brittain showed to some advantage over Elliott, while Kilgour made up for the weakness of the front division in his team by equalling the exceptional bowling that he has displayed during the winter season. Between the two skips there was little to come and go on. Both played excel- j lent bowls. Thus it was that the de- i ciding victory to Sneddon’s team came in the ninth head, when a handsome | six was scored. The circumstance 1 was that his team completely outdrew j its opponents, leaving six closely ' drawn bowls completely surrounding the head when the skips .hanged over. Howe elected to direct Fookes to draw thro vigil a possible opening—a very delicate and fine shot. The latter just failed in this objective, although bowling well. it was certainly open to question that the dead-draw shot could be the most effective under the existm S conditions, as the head was rather hopelessly blocked. Opinion is widely expressed that better tactics would have been a firm shot to save. The same ended 21—19, and was the final same in one of the most enjoyable one-day tournaments that has been Played in Auckland for some time. T J^ r ; ,S. M. Stone president of the dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association, arrived in Auckland on Saturday last. He came to Auckland with the express object of coming in closer contact with the bowlers here, and also to meet the touring bowlers and Mr. J. W. Hardley on their return jrom abroad. On Saturday afternoon } e attended the opening of the Henderson Club in company with Mr. S. coidicutt, president of the Auckland entre, and Mr. James Pascoe, pastpresident of the same body, and Mr. Yeoman. At that function he ,°bk the opportunity of congratulatthe Auckland bowlers on the “important part played in the establishent of the annual test match between anc * ew Zealand, which will . ayed in Wellington this season, ift! J ln the Year. During the «. Jf rnoon be also visited the Avondale, Lynn, Carlton, Remuera and Clu bs. where he met with hearty receptions.

such and not a race fur bowling honours, there should be little cause for complaint by the participants. From the point of view of a classical bowling contest, it has many weaknesses, as it was never intended for such a purpose, but from the angle of a huge inter-club fixture the competition has much* to commend it. Mr. George Rudd, of the Auckland Club, who played in the A pennant competition in Melbourne last season, states that that competition is run on entirely different lines to the same fixture played here. The members of each club select four teams to represent them in the A section, also four teams in the B section, and if there are sufficient players left they form the C section. These teams are drilled like racehorses, it being compulsory for them to play two practice games of 25 heads during the week. Thus it is that all players seldom meet in play on the green together »n the manner that is current in this city. This classification of players into three distinct groups can be considered as the greatest weakness of the com* petition, and is in striking contrast to the system adopted here, where every attempt is made to draw as many players into the big inter-club competition as possible. The Carlton Club has selected the Bendigo bowls team to represent the club in the coming competition. It comprises Messrs. W. Ball, J. Kilgour, VY. Bates and T. Mitchell. No attempt was made to find the strongest team in the club. It was decided to give the honour of representation to officers of the club who had done good service in the general interest of all the members.
