LAUGHING PRINCE
WINNER OF CANTERBURY CUP
PRIDE CAPTURES THE OAKS
THE Canterbury Jockey Club continued its Cup carnival a further stage at Riccarton yesterday in glorious weather. There was a fairly good crowd iu attendance, and the track was in perfect order. Totalisator investments reached £39,541, against £41,034.
Suburban Handicap The bracket, Quarterdeck-Broad-moor, wound up a solid first choice for the Suburban Handicap, and that pair filled first and second places respectively. Broadmoor attempted to lead throughout. and when he turned for home with an appreciable lead from Beaumont, it certainly seemed as if he would take a deal of catching, but he tired a little over the concluding stages, and his more seasoned stablemate, Quarterdeck, who finished strongly, got up to beat him by half a length. Quarterdeck was ridden a very confident race by the hurdle horseman, G. Salt, and she impressed with her finishing effort. Black Mint was at
the tail of the field for six furlongs, but half a mile from home he commenced to move up and was handy to the leaders soon after entering the straight. He ran on well under his big weight over the last furlong, but he was three lengths behind Broadmoor in third place when the judge was reached. Shining Armour ran a really good race for three parts of the journey in the New Zealand Cup on Saturday, and on that running he appeared to have very favourable prospects. but after having every chance he failed to make an impression on the leaders in the straight, and was well beaten into fourth place. At the distance post Chickwheat looked a possibility, but his run was short-lived and he was well back at the end. Spring Nursery Speed Light scored a very decisive win in the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham last month, and many expected her to make a bold bid for victory in the Welcome Stakes on Saturday. However, she ran below expectations in that classic event, but to-day she showed a return to form by running away from a good field of youngsters in the Spring Nursery Handicap. Gold Tingo and Passbook were smartest to begin, but Speed Light soon ran to the front, and she piloted the field into the straight from Passbook. Speed Light easily held her own in the run down the straight, and was not extended to beat Gold Tinge by a length and a-half. The last-named ran another good race, and was doing better at the end than at any other stage. Duellona gave trouble at the barrier and lost a little ground at the start, but she finished very determinedly in the straight to gain third place. Passbook, who ran about a lot, was close up fourth. Just before the straight was reached Aspiring was badly interfered with, and when bumped she went back on to Belcaire, who also suffered badly. As a result of the mishap Aspiring should take all kinds of beating oli Saturday, and with a clear run may outclass her rivals. Otaio Plate The Otaio Plate was productive of a great finish. Entering the straight several runners appeared to have a chance, but over the last furlong Historic and Lucy Locket drew out, and in a thrilling finish Lucy Locket beat Historic by a nose. Sir Roy came fast over the last furlong to gain third place, and . was followed home by Beau Geste. The unlucky runner of the race was Sir Roy. He was well back in the early part, and half a mile from home was standing the leaders a big start. But he unwound a strong run over the last furlong, and wag going great guns at the end. Beau Geste ran another good race, and his winning turn cannot be far away. Canterbury Cup The withdrawal of Rapier, who was galloped on in the New Zealand Cup, robbed the Canterbury Cup of a great deal of interest. Laughing Prince was made a screaming hot favourite, and thoroughly justified the support placed in his ability to win. He allowed Count Cavour to take the lead for the first mile and a-half, but once the straight was reached he came on to score an
easy victory. Count Cavour hung on well in the straight to beat Black Mint by a length for second money. The first six furlongs were covered in 1.21, the mile in 1.46 2-5, the mile and aquarter in 2.11 2-5, and the full journey in 3.1 2-5. Laughing Prince never looked ih danger of defeat at any stage, and it is nof certain that he will touch a short price for the Stead Gold Cup on Saturday. Jockey Club Handicap Crown Area was sold for 2,000 guineas on Monday to the Riccarton owner-trainer, J. McCombe, and his victory to-day in the Jockey Club Handicap must make him a very cheap horse. He returned a very appreciable dividend, and rumour has it that his connections threw in for a huge win. For the first six furlongs he was at the tail of the field, but soon after entering ' the straight he seized an opening in the middle of the field, and quickly getting to the front came on to beat Goblin Market by a head. Set Sail ran a good race into third place, and was followed home by Benzora, Bright Glow, Solrose and Battle Colours, with Celerity 11. last. How fast Crown Area travelled over the last
hall' mile may be gathered from the fact that beginning with the leader and ending with the winner that distance was covered in 47 4-5, and as Crown Area was several lengths behind the leader at the half mile, it is computed that he ran his last four furlongs in 46 2-5. It was an excellent performance on the part of the Acre gelding, and he might even have to be taken into consideration for the Stead Gold Cup on Saturday. New Zealand Oaks Sarnia was considered to hold a mortgage on the New Zealand Oaks, but she was beaten into third place by Pride and Prickles. Cliildsplay went to the front from the outset, and down the back she led Prickles, Pride, and Sarnia. At the half-rnile Childplay still held charge, and she led into the straight from Prickles and Sarnia, while Pride headed the remainder. Sarnia drew nearly level with Prickles halfway down the running, but 50 yards from the post Prickles began to draw away slightly. But, with a suddenness that was quite unexpected, Pride came on the scene with a lightning like run, and she defeated Prickles by half a length. Sarnia was a length away third, followed by Cliildsplay, Royal Flower, Lucky Light, and Calamine. Pride’s victory was full of merit, and she won so well that she should again show to advantage if started on Saturday. It is only her third outing in public, so she can be expected to improve from now on. Ashley Handicap Amor finished brilliantly to win the Ashley Handicap from the Australianbred filly Swoopalong. The latter went to the front from the start, and was bowling along so freely entering the straight that she looked like taking all kinds of beating, but the more seasoned Amor finished stoutest over the last 100 yards, and beat her home by a long neck. Freezeout was close up third, followed by Phastar. The Viscount, Haze, Bank Draft, and All Comment. Avon Handicap Backers would not hear of the defeat of the North Islander, King Midas, in the Avon Handicap, but the Polymestor gelding struck a snag in the Riccarton-trained Gay Sonnet. The latter made every post a winning post, and she eventually beat King Midas by three lengths. The third horse was another length away, followed by Rascal, Decoy Bird, Taboo, and Silver Coot.
