Limerick’s Brother

Limerick’s yearling brother, by Limond from Medley, has been gelded, and he will be spelled for a few months, after which he will be broken in and got ready for two-year-old racing. Speedy Monetize The speed shown by Monetize in his track essays indicated that he was a galloper above the ordinary, and naturally his prospects in the Maiden at Avondale looked particularly rosy. That he failed is history, but that form can be overlooked, for he is capable of doing much better than fourth, the berth he occupied on Saturday. Monetize should be all the better for racing, and in a smaller field will reinstate himself with his admirers. Lack of experience was one of the principal causes for the two defeats that went against him. Te Money’s Finish In the first division of the Maiden at Avondale on Thursday the daughter of Paper Money, Te Money, showed she had the family speed, and ran quite a respectable race. Ridden by McTavish in a similar event on Saturday she was never prominent until well into the home stretch when she came with a great burst of speed to beat Red Lion by a head. It was an impressive piece of work, and no doubt Te Money will do better. Red Lion was always in the picture, and should not be long in catching a race. Bargains at Gisborne Sandbur, who last week was purchased by a Napier resident for 11 guineas, is to be used as a hack by his new owner. The brother to Cohesion, for such is Sandbur, was fairly useful last season, as he won three events and in addition secured a second and third placing, winning stake money to the extent of £290. Admiral Codrington, who was disposed of for a guinea a leg last week, should surely have been pensioned oft, as the chestnut gelding is now in his 18th year. During his turf career, when at his best, the Admiral was, in his own class, hard to beat. It is not likely that he will ever grace the racing trail again. At the same time as Sandbur and Admiral Codrington were disposed of, Kpistle also found a new owner, Mr. C. H. Slater, of Hastings, who is interested in Pale Star, becoming the new owner for a consideration of S 3 guineas. At the price she cannot be termed an expensive investment, for if she never races again she should be well worth the money for breeding purposes, as she is by Polydamon—Communique, by Finland—War Talk, by Martian—Gossip (dam of Bobrikoff), by Wallace—Caroline.

Harbour View Unlucky Among the moderates he was meeting in the hurdle race at Avondale on Saturday, Mangani shone out, but it is possible that had Harbour View been ridden with a litte more judgment he would have beaten Mangani. Harbour View was up and down several times, and this did not improve his chances by any means. Later on he should be a good performer over the sticks, for he has the pace and can jump well, too. The Koatanui Stud Writing in a recent issue of the Sydney “Referee,” Ken Austin, the well-known horse salesman and breeding authority, had the following interesting remarks to make concerning yearlings at Mr. G. M. Currie’s stud: Writing of high-priced yearlings, it is quite on the cards that a record will be established at the New Zealand yearling sales if Mr. George Currie decides to send an own sister to Episode into the ring. The latter was the best two-year-old in the Dominion during the 1927-28 season, having been successful in the Auckland Great Northern Champagne Stakes, Manawatu Stakes, and other good races, and the present yearling is described by good judges to be the best of her sex yet reared at Koatanui. She is by the very successful sire, Limond, from Homage, an own sister to Eulalie, Epitaph and Humbug, a half sister to Commendation. her dam, Homage, being by Absurd from imported Eulogy, by Cicero. In addition to this beautiful filly, whose brother last year was sold as a yearling for 2,300gn5., Mr. Currie will also send into the ring some very high-class youngsters. Among the Limonds he has this year at his beautiful property at Koatanui are a sister to Commendation, a brother to Agrion (winner of the New Zealand Derby), a brown colt from Motley, an own sister to that good horse, Lysandjer, a brown colt from Veil (a very speedy sister to The Monk), a bay colt from Anklet by Absurd from Bronze, a brown filly from Tivoli, a half sister to Rose Queen, and a bay filly from Farce, sister to The Monk. In addition to Limond stock that Mr. Currie will offer, he has two splendid colts by Thespian, the best horse sired by Absurd. One is a great lengthy colt from Pennon, dam of Lysander, while the other is from Rose Queen, dam of Tho Thorn and Rosewreath, and was, as a foal, one of the finest looking youngsters I have ever seen. The success of horses bred by Mr. Currie should tempt buyers from Australia either to go over personally and bid for his yearlings, or send a commission. The Limonds are sure to be more in demand than ever, for it certainly looks as if his great son, Lime - ick, will add further triumphs to his already big total. And apart from him. Limond has sired such really good horses of both sexes that the prospect ahead of any yearling by him is a very bright one.
