MAKING TRADE WITHIN EMPIRE IMPOSSIBLE
AUSTRALIA'S TARIFF NEW ZEALANDER’S PROTEST (United P.A.—By Telegraphs — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 12.5 p.m. SYDNEY. To-day. Before the Tariff Board to-day Mr. Andrew Freebairn, of the New Zealand Co-cperative Dairy Company, Ltd., opposed the application for a dumping duty on New Zealand skim milk. He stated that Australian manufacturers were already protected to the extent of £l9 a ton, and any increase would seriously endanger the use of skim milk powder for manufacturing purposes. He warned the Tariff Board that retaliatory measures imposed by those parts of the Empire against whom Australia was imposing duties, would make trade within the Empire impossible. Mr. Patrick Grant, of the Primary Producers’ Union of New South Wales, supporting the application, said that as long as Australian manufacturers could supply their own reasonable requirements, some measure of protection was desirable. The board then adjourned.
