School Committee Wants One “AMERICAN SPELLING” Birkenhead School Committee wants a censorship of Auckland newspapers. Writing to the Auckland Education Board the committee “drew attention to the prevalence of American spelling in newspapers.” It suggested that the board should point out the fault to the newspapers. x The chairman of the board, Mr. A. Burns, said: “Well, I’ip not going to take on the censorship of the newspapers. Let some one else do it. Mr. H. S. W. King: Have they got any examples of American spelling? The Chairman: No. Anyhow it is a question for the editors and the reporters. “It certainly is an educational question if they have any examples,” said Mr. King. “I have not noticed any American spelling myself in the papers.” The board decided “just to receive” the letter from Birkenhead.
