MEMBER QUESTIONS COMMITTEE DISCUSSION

HARBOUR AND DRAINAGE ARRANGEMENTS AT ORAKEI It was Mr. J. Hislop who, at yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board, questioned the practice of referring subjects for discussion by the board in committee. The Birkenhead Borough Council had asked for a reduction in the £lO rental proposed for the borough septic tank area. In moving that tire request should be referred to the board in committee, the acting-chairman, Mr. M. H. Wynyard, said the question was somewhat trivial. The board was also savins the council the trouble of acquiring a site for the tanks. Mr. Hislop seconded the motion, but thought that the request should have been discussed In open board. It seemed that a precedent was being made. He wanted to know what rental was paid by the Auckland and Suburban Drainage • Board for the space occupied by its sewers and the Orakei outlet.

“Wait until we go into committee,” broke in a member. •Mr, Hislop said he was not completely in agreement to referring such questions for committee discussion. for. T. B. Clay: The objection is out of order. Mr. Wynyard informed Mr. Hislop that the question would be fully discussed in committee.

“Oh. I am perfectly within my rights in saying what I have,” Mr. Hislop told the meeting. “In the first place charge shouldn’t have been made.” Mr. Wynyard’s motion was carried. Later, Mr. Hislop again asked for particulars of the rental for the Hobson Bay sewer space and the Orakei outlet.

He was informed by Mr. IT. B. Burnett, the superintendent, that there was no rental on the outlet. Arrangement had been made by Act of Parliament. There was a mutual agreement between the Harbour Board and the Drainage Board.

Mr. Wynyard endorsed this, and mentioned that it was thought that the Harbour Board would later reclaim land in the area.

The Hon. E. W. Alison gave it as his opinion that the board should assist in every way in such an important public work as drainage.
