FERRY LANDING WELL ADVANCED All sections of the work at the ( eastern vehicular ferry landing at Mechanics’ Bay are well advanced, said the report of the engineer to the Auckland Harbour Board at yesterday afternoon’s meeting. The reinforced concrete portal has been- completed and the concrete winch-house, which has been built at the North Wall, will be floated into position shortly. The bridge at the landing is ready to be lifted into position, and 72 of the turpentine piles for the slip have been driven. Good progress has been made with the 90ft roadway at Mechanics’ Bay. Driving and filling have been carried on at the breastwork and a concrete wall has been constructed at Eastern Breakwater to bring it up to reclamation level. The Pollock Wharf is almost completed. The old wharf is being demolished. Letters from the town clerk and the engineer to the Birkenhead Borough Council asked for a reduction in the £lO rental charged by the board for the site of the septic tanks at Birkenhead. On the motion of the acting-chairman, Mr. M. H. Wynyard, the letters were referred to the board in committee. A letter from the town clerk, Devonport, stating that the council would pay £2,000 with 6 per cent, interest from July 11, for reclamation work, on November 9, was received. Cash receipts for Waitemata Harbour for October amounted to £30,415, a decrease of £1,949 on the* figures for the same period in 1927. Receipts for Manukau Harbour were £570. a drop of £49. The gross tonnage of the arrivals during October was 342,722, and of the departures, 327,966. Compared with October, 1927, the number of large vessels shows a decrease of three, but the tonnage is greater. At Onehunga, in the arrivals there was an increase in the gross tonnage of 2,381. AJ: a special meeting before the ordinary business, the board adopted amendments to its by-laws.
