Auckland Hears Cup Race Run LONG RELAY LINE A vivid description of the running of the Melbourne Cup race at Flemington yesterday was broadcast by j the Sydney short-wave station. 2ME. In spite of the long land-line of about I 460 miles from the racecourse to Sydney the voice of the expert describing the event was heard suffieiently clearly for the positions of the various horses to be followed throughout. Station 2ME, operated by Amalgamated Wireless of Australia. Limited, was early on the air, results of races preceding the main cup event being broadcast. The Sydney stations on the broadcast band, 2FC and 2BL, both relayed descriptions of the cup race, as did also 3LO and 3ME, in Melbourne. New Zealand stations relayed the Australian transmissions with fair success. Unfortunately the noises on the relay line on the other side of the Tasman and on the line from XYA’s receiving station at Takapuna prevented crystal set users in Auckland from hearing distinctly, and the final placings were in doubt until the announcement, from the studio at Sydney. Station 2YA, Wellington, was somewhat more successful owing to short relay line from the receiving station to the transmitter on the Roseneath Hills. Both stations are to be complimented on their very creditable attempts. The transmission yesterday was much superior to that of last year and illustrates the great advances made in radio broadcasting during the past 12 months. The relay from Flemington was the second longest made in Australia or New Zealand, the longest being the relay to Sydney from Brisbane of a description of the landing of Mr. Bert Hinkler after his solo flight from England, and later, the landing of the Southern Cross, after its hop from Suva. All these relays were made by Amalgamated Wireless, Ltd.
