PARTY SHACKLES

LABOUR CANDIDATE EXPLAINS DEBATE AT THAMES (Special to THE SUN) THAMES, Tuesday. A debate on the- methods and practices of opposing political parties was carried a stage further this evening when the Labour candidate replied to his opponent. Mr. J. S. Montgomerie (Labour) recently challenged Mr. A. M. Samuel (Reform) to prove that he (Mr. Montgomerie) was shackled hand and foot by liis party. Mr. Samuel replied by quoting the Labour Party’s declared platform. “I and every other member of the Labour Party gupport that plank in the party’s platform, which advocates the enactment of a law to bring in the initiative, referendum, and recall,” returned Mr. Montgomerie. “Until this is made law I am in precisely the same position as any other candidate of any party. “In any case, this law does not give any special power to the Labour Party leaders, but it would give the electors the right of recall if a member should prove false to his election pledges. To say that I am either not in agreement with my party’s platform or else with its election manifesto, is really a quibble, due to a misunderstanding by Mr. Samuel of the facts.”
