THE PROPHETS

MR. GREVILLE ALSO CONFIDENT “TWO HUNDRED MAJORITY” At Takapuna last evening Mr. R. H. Greville, United candidate for Waitemata, became a prophet. To an audience over which Mr. J. W. Williamson presided, Mr. Greville said that a night or two ago Mr. Harris had predicted an overwhelming victory for himself on polling day. “That gentleman may not be aware,” said Mr. Greville. ‘‘that hundreds of Waitemata Reformers of previous times were transferring their allegiance to the United Party. On my committee are some of Mr. Harris’s best supporters of other times.” Mr. Harris had ventured to make a forecast of the poll, but the speaker said he could prophesy that the United Party candidate would be two or three hundred votes ahead of Reform. Mr. Greville asserted that in the hands of the Hon. A. D. McLeod the present Government had adopted a policy of drift in land matters. The Uniteds had unbounded faith in the future of New Zealand and were prepared to set in motion a stream of settlement. The group system of land settlement as practised in Western Australia and elsewhere was explained by the candidate, who said his party would apply a similar system to New Zealand. Mr. Greville appealed to liis audience to support Sir Joseph Ward, “the only statesman in New Zealand.” In reply to a questioner, the candidate stated that he was in favour of a 5 per cent, majority upon the liquor question. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried with one dissentient.
