TURNED BACKS ON WORK
COAL-LUMPERS SUPPORT WATERSIDERS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) MELBOURNE, Monday. The waterside dispute took a new turn to-day. The coal lumpers refused to coal two steamers at Port Melbourne. Their licences will probably be cancelled. When a call was made for men to coal the liner Beltana those present turned their backs and refused to be engaged. The Beltana is now being loaded by volunteers. CREATING BAD BLOOD ITALIAN CONSUL’S OUTBURST (United Service) LONDON, Saturday. “The Observer” comments upon the protest recently made by the Italian Consul at Melbourne, Signor Mario Caros, on behalf of Italian workers who were attacked on the wharves. The paper says it will probably recommend itself to Mussolini, but such episodes create bad blood between peoples and weaken the claims of democracy to dominate the world.
