Guy Fawkes Dance

Takapuna Boating Club Holds High Revel TOPICAL NOVELTIES A very gay host of dancers thronged the popular boating clubhouse at Bayswater last evening, when the Takapuna Boating Club held a special Guy Fawkes dance. The very realistic scenic canvases decorating the ballroom made an effective setting for the numbers of beautiful frocks. Downstairs the supper room was transformed with arches of feathery bamboo and gently-swing-ing Chinese lanterns, while gay Iceland poppies made splashes of colour among the greenery on the tables. Original novelties had been arranged to add to the enjoyment of the guests. Confetti was showered upon the dancers by four tiny children dressed as Guy Fawkes, who were seated on swings suspended from the ceiling. A bonfire and a generous supply of crackers were features of the evening, and added to the general excitement. Miss Margaret O’Connor and partner demonstrated the newest ballroom dances. Birtley’s Orchestra dispensed the latest and brightest dance numbers. The women of the committee present were: Mrs. Lidgard, bouffant frock of pervenche blue and silver gros grain taffeta and tulle. FAREWELL PARTY The last of a series of farewell parties to Mr. Bullivant, who leaves for England on Tuesday, was given by Mrs. J. Chapman at her home in Dominion Road on Saturday evening. LEAGUE OF MOTHERS MEETING AT TE PAPAPA Members of the Onehunga branch of the League of Mothers were guests of the Te Papapa members at the October meeting. The reports and minutes of the Dominion Conference held in Wellington recently were presented by the Auckland president and secretary, Mrs. Mitchell and Miss Arey, who both gave interesting addresses. The president of the Onehunga branch, Mrs. Benfell, gave an interesting account of the open-air schools. Musical items were given by Mrs. W. Marks and the afternoon concluded with tea. SALE OF WORK FAIR AT HENDERSON For the purpose of raising funds to reduce the debt on the vicarage, a sale of work, conducted by the Ladies’ Guild of St. Michael’s Anglican Church, Henderson, was held in the Henderson Town Hall on Thursday afternoon and evening. The sale was opened by Miss Averill, who congratulated the ladies upon the excellent work they had accomplished and expressed the hope that their efforts would be successful. She was presented with a bouquet of roses and sweet peas. The hall was prettily decorated by Mrs. Morgan with branches of copper beech, bamboo and crimson azalea. The cake, fruit, preserves, vegetable and needlework stalls were well stocked and the sweets stall was well patronised. A fine exhibition of needlework was made by the Girls’ Club. Guessing and nail-driving competitions were held and items were given by Misses S. Stacpoole, L. Moore and E. Wayne. The fair should result in a considerable sum being raised.
