N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS THE OPENING ROUND The opening round in the New Zealand amateur billiards championship began yesterday at the rooms of the Auckland Sports Club. In the afternoon E. W. Warren and A. Scott 1 were the players, and after a wellfought out game Scott won by 103 points. Scott compiled a break of 54 unfinished, as well as scores of 51, 36, 33, 31, 27 and 24, averaging 7. "Warren battled gamely to avert defeat with breaks of 59, 31, 31 and 23. In the evening H. F. Valentine and M. D. White played a game in which consistent scoring was a feature. It resulted in favour of White by 25 points. The best scores were: White: 49, 38, 35, 30, 26, 26, 24, 21, 20 and 24 unfinished; average, 8.7. Valentine: 46, 42, 32, 29, 28, 25, 22, 20. The games were much enjoyed by large audiences and the players got a great reception. Play will be continued at 3 o’clock this afternoon, when W. E. Hackett meets F. H. Taylor, and at 8 p.m., when F. B. Lovelock and E. V. Roberts, holder of the championship, will be opponents.
