GUY FAWKES FIRES

HOUSE, HAYSTACK AND TREES FIRE BRIGADES BUSY Guy Fawkes Day celebrations were responsible for several small fires in the city and suburbs last evening. Most of them broke out about eight o’clock. The most sei;ious one, which occurred in Veronica Terrace, Moun Albert, was caused by a bonfire spreading out to some trees. Three houses were in danger from the flames and the Mount Albert Fire Brigade fiad to be called out to save them. A five-roomed house in Maro Street, owned and occupied by Mr. E. Trigg, had one room slightly damaged when a flaring rocket lodged in a corner of the gable. The Avondale Fire Brigade turned out promptly and saved the rest of the house from damage. A haystack owned by Mr. Robert Smith, in Mariri Road, Onehunga, was badly damaged when some sparks set fire to it. People living near-by thought it was a bonfire burning and did not call the Brigade until 9.40 p.m., when the fire had been blazing some time. The fire was put out but the stack was so damaged that it is now practically valueless. There were also two gorse fires, one in Carrington Road, Point Chevalier, and tlie other in Richmond Road, Grey Lynn. The Point Chevalier brigade attended the first and the City and Ponsonby Brigades went out to the other.
