ONEHUNGA AFFAIRS
RAILWAY ROAD IN BAD REPAIR IMPROVEMENT WANTED 1 The Onehunga Borough Council was advised at its meeting last evening that it is the intention of the Post and Telegraph Department to instal public -telephone cabinets near the post office, Te Papapa, and at the junction of Tawa and Rawhiti Hoads. The Main Highways Board forwarded a cheque for .C 212 19s 6d, being the council's share of the petrol tax collected for the quarter ended Septernber 30. Cr. E. Morton suggested that this amount be earmarked for the repair of the road leading to the wharf. Cr. R. (Jr. Speight pointed out that that particular road was under the control of the Railway Department and was in a disgraceful condition. Complaints had already been made but had been ignored. Cr. E. Morton suggested that possibly the Railway Department was not unduly concerned with improving a road which was used by motor traffic in competition against it. Cr. F. S. Morton regarded the neglect by the department as reprehensible, and he suggested that the council close the road until repairs were made. It was agreed that the Railway Department be again requested to put the road in order. The council was urged by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce to earnestly consider the suggestions on unemployment made in The Sun on October 25. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, the town clerk was instructed to advise the public, through the Press, requesting its co-opertaion in providing odd jobs for the unemployed.
The Prime Minister wrote asking that all those unable to attend church on Sunday next, Armistice Day, to observe silence for two minutes at 11 a.m. The town clerk was instructed to advertise the Prime Minister’s request. The Auckland Rugby Union forwarded a cheque for £25 as a contribution toward the improvement of the recreation reserve. This donation will carry a subsidy of equal amount from the Public Works Department for unemployment relief work. A promise of £lO toward the same fund was also made by the Auckland Football Association.
The Hockey Association wrote for an assurance that it would be allocated playing grounds on the reserve before it decided to contribute. In the event of a satisfactory reply a donation would be forthcoming. In addition to the above contributions, the Onehunga Sports Federation wrote to say that it would donate at least £5. It was decided to inform the Hockey Association that it would bo allocated grounds, but the council was not yet in a position to decide the number of areas available. The district fund account is £137 in credit and there remains a sum of £389 to the credit of the water mains loan.
It was decided to exempt Mount Pleasant Road from the provisions of section 117 of the Public Works Act. Accounts amounting to £1,847 were passed for payment.
