LABOUR PLEASED
GAINS IN MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS EFFECT ON GENERAL ELECTION (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) LONDON, Saturday. The Leader of the Labour Party, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, describes the result of the municipal elections as magnificently encouraging. Mr. Arthur Henderson, Labour M.P. for Burnley, says that in view of the approach of the general election Labour’s wonderful victories are full of significance. Mr. Philip Suowden, Labour M.P. for Colne Valley, says the results have followed the trend of the Parliamentary by-elections and show that Labour is making remarkable headway in the industrial centres. Officials at the Conservatives’ headquarters express the opinion that no real political significance attaches to the elections. They were fought on local issues. The general election will concern other matters, with a new register # including an additional 5,000,000 women. Sir W. J. Bull, Conservative M.P. for Hammersmith, says it is a good thing his party hast lost seats.’ It will show the apathy of the Conservatives and frighten the people into increased anti-Labour activity.
