NEW TRUSTEES ELECTED
WAIATARUA DRAINAGE BOARD TRANSFER TO CITY The transformation of Lake St% John and the provision of a road around it is a proposal at present under consideration by the City Council. Lake St. John is actually under the control of the Waiatarua Drainage Board, but holding that the City Council could more readily collect the rates, the board is endeavouring to persuade the council to take over its duties. The City Council is at present negotiating with the Government for a loan which would cover work, on a relief basis, for improvements at the area, and The provision of a 100-feet road round the lake. An area of-100 acres was vested in the council by Air. R. H. Abbott, one of the provisions being that the road should be completed by 1931. The board has offered £IOO for two years as a help for the work. While it is held to be impossible to gauge whether the lake water has any bearing upon the Onehunga water supply, engineers hold the opinion that a lake of some size, approximately about 30 acres, must be in the basin for some time.
The necessity for the Waiatarua Board will cease about 1955, when the loans that have been raised for drainage purposes have been liquidated. As only five nominations were received for the drainage board, those nominated were duly elected trustees. The new trustees of the board are: Ralph Thomas* Aliohaels, Charles Harold Abbott, William Johnson Crowther, Ernest Yates, Stanley George Chambers.
