How Oratrix Won The N.Z. Cup

HONOUR’S SUCCESS IN STAKES

(Special to THE SUXJ GETTING ill at a light weight, Oratrix scored a handsome victory in the New Zealand Cup over last year’s winner. Rapier, with Hoylake in third place. Oratrix i* engaged in the Auckland Cup. Silvermine won the Stewards’ Handicap for Taranaki, and Ricearton had its say in the Welcome Stakes, which won by the highly, priced Honour, a sister to Episode.

CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Another New Zealand Cup has been decided, and the winner has turned up in Oratrix, first favourite, and daughter of a previous cup winner. Oratress, who won the event in 1920. Rapier, the top weight, made a big bid, but could get no nearer than a couple of lengths of the winner. Hoylake was the pacemaker, and after leading to wthin 150 yards of the post was unable to sustain his effort further than to annex a consolation share of the stake, half a length behind Rapier. Beau Geste was fourth. The time was 1 1-5 sec. slower than Rapier’s time of last year, and is the slowest for six years. It was L. J. Ellis’s first victory in the race, and is a particularly creditable performance for a young jockey. The Canterbury Jockey Club opened its carnival in dull but fine weather. The track was in excellent order after the recent rain, and was conducive to good times being put up. There was a large attendance. The totalisator handled £61,919, against £65.509 last Cup day. Spring Hurdles Beaumont schooled poorly at Riccarton yesterday, but he gave a greatly improved display when he won the Spring Hurdles in good style from a hot favourite in Nukumai. He was always in a handy position, but at the home turn he made a forward move, and at the last fence he was almost in line with Nukumai and Carinthia, but sticking to his task gamely he beat the top-weight home by nearly a

led Beau Geste by two lengths. How ever, he went away again across tb« top and was three lengths clear 0 f Beau Geste turning for home. Halfway down the running Hoylake was still in front, but a little farther on Oratrix got to the front inside the distance and went to score a brilliant victory. Rapier finished in great style over the last furlong and was going great guns at the end in second place. Hoylake tired over the last furlong and was half a length behind Rapier. Then came Beau Geste, who ran a great race. Next to finish Were Pink Note, Rotor, Beacon Light and Set Sail, with Count Cavour last.

Oratrix is only in her third year of racing. In her first season she the Maiden at Blenheim. She was sold early last season by her former owner, Mr. S. Gibbons, to her present owner. Mr. R. J. Murphy, and very quickly made a return by winning the Hagley Handicap on the second day of the last New Zealand Cup meeting. During last season she won on four other occasions, the Grandstand Handicap and Liverpool Handicap at the Manawatu summer meeting, Pahiatua Cup. and Flaxbourne Handicap at Blenheim. Her third to Hynanna and Lady Desmond in the Great Autumn was a performance that gave a glimpse of her possibilities. Taken over to Sydney early this season she rag second to Jocelyn in the Metropolitan Handicap, and was gathering in the leader quickly at the end. It was ths

length. In the early stages Nukumai toiled along in the rear with Nucleus, but after passing the mile post he began to improve his position. Soon after entering the straight he made a gallant attempt to overtake Beaumont, but he tired under his severe impost over the last 100 yards, and was beaten by three-quarters of a length. Carinthia had every chance, but after looking a possibility at the last fence he weakened into third place. Of the others Troilus, who recently entered F. P. Claridge’s stable, did best. Spring Plate Mendip wound up favourite for the Spring Plate, but there 'was plenty of support for Teri, Sarnia and Cashier. In the early stages the favourite was lying about seventh, but approaching the straight he moved up smartly. Soon after entering the straight he received an opening, and his rider shot him through on the false rail. Mendip got to the front at the distance and defeated Cashier by two lengths. It was a very impressive performance, and in his present form Mendip should be hard to beat in any race he contests in the near future. Cashier was always racing in a prominent position, but he was squarely beaten at the end. Sarnia put up a sterling performance to get third place, and it is now* certain that she will start favourite for the New Zealand Oaks. In to-day’s race she was a long way behind the leading division with a-half mile to go, but over the last bit she put in a great run, and in another 50 yards would have cut Cashier out of second place. Teri had every chance, but was not good enough. At the home turn he was going so well that it certainly seemed as if he would be either first or second, but he petered out in the run down the straight and was beaten into fourth place. The New Zealand Derby candidate, Roscrea, looked very fit when paraded in the birdcage, but he failed to impress. Halfway up the running he looked a place possibility, but he had come to the erfd of his run a long way from home. To win Monday’s classic race he would need to improve considerably on his effort to-day, and his chance of success looks anything but bright. Lirryvood Handicap The Derby candidate Nightmarch put up an excellent performance when in a close finish he defeated Red Heckle by half a length in the Linwood Handicap. He was handled admirably by Roy Reed and finished so stoutly that he must be taken into consideration for Monday’s classic race. Red Heckle was going nicely at the home turn, and when he hit the front it looked like his taking all kinds of beating, but he failed to withstand Nightmarch’s strong challenge. Camisader was not too well placed early, but he was going well at the end in third place, five lengths behind Red Heckle. New Zealand Cup Oratrix, the favourite, scored a meritorious victory in the New Zealand Cup from the top-weight. Rapier. She was ridden a wonderful race by the Southland light-weight jockey, L. J. Ellis, and thoroughly deserved her win. But had Hoylake been ridden a decent race he would have made it much harder for the Kilbroney mare. In the early stages Hoylake opened up a break of ten lengths on Beau Geste, and going down the back he was so far in front that his admirers declared he would never be caught. But six furlongs from home he began to come back to his field, and at the half-mile

performance that installed her favourite for to-day’s race. It is noteworthy that her dam won the Ne* Zealand Cup in 1920. Welcome Stakes The high-priced Honour registered• performance of rare merit when he annexed the Welcome Stakes from Aspiring. Entering the straight bf was tucked in behind the leaders, bat at the false rail he received an opening and Ellis then gave him his head. Inside 50 yards he got to the front, and. sustaining his run, defeated Aspiring by a length and a-half. Aspiring had every chance, but he was beaten by a youngster who likely to develop championship form. Honour, a. fullbrother to Episode, was making his first appearance in public to-day, and did so well at the end that he should go through the remainder of the season unbeaten. Gold Tinge ran a better race than at Trentham. and was finishing on resolutely over the last fur* long In third place. Apprentices’ Handicap

Rabbi was strongly supported fo* the Apprentices’ Handicap, but he haw a close call, for he just managed to head the fast-finishing Amor by a necK. Pride was slow to leave the barr |* Calamine took up the early running and led past the seven furlongs frojj Smithereens, Amor, The Viscount ann Waterlow. At the far turn Waterloo had run to the front, and he lea the half-mile from Rabbi, Smitnereens, The Viscount, Quarterdeck ano Uproar.
