Country Club Does well at Avondale
DARGAVILLE’S BIG TURNOVER A FINE DAY’S SPORT All roads led to Avondale on Saturday. a very large attendance being registered at the concluding day’s racing of the annual meeting of the Dargaville Racing Club. It was like a summer’s day, and the pleasant conditions saw a general exodus from the city for the great and naturally enough the Sport of Kings captured its quota. Usually a rather bleak spot, Avondale on Saturday was actually like a summer resort. The course was in excellent order, and the sport first class, while the management throughout the meeting left nothing to be desired. The totalisator staff was kept going at top pressure, the large sum of £35,529 being handled, despite the fact that the hurdle race provided only a one-dividend field, at which many backers were shy. The total fo.r the two days was £59,028, as compared with £18,475 when the last fixture eventuated at Dargaville 12 months ago. The increase of £40,553 should materially assist the Northern club to cater for the sport better than hitherto. Notes on the racing and details of results are given below. Hore Hore Handicap There were 25 starters in the opening event, the Hore Hore Handicap, and in a modest pool the best backed was the Red Lion —Town Teller bracket, £445, with even backing for Owairaka, £243, Good Boy, £IS2, Monetize £I7S, Valsier £l7l, and Te Money £IG7. After a delay they were despatched, St. Ames, Piriata, Semicircle, and Frothblower were slow away, Roman Pearl going out fast from Sulla, Red Lion, Tukenoa, Camp Prince, Furore, Josie Melville, Red Lion, Town Teller, and Zane Grey. Furore was in charge crossing the top, and he piloted the field into the straight slightly in advance of Sulla and Josie Melville, following them being Monetize, Roman Furore, Josie Melville, Blue Spear, Town Teller, Lineroo, and Zatie Grey. At the distance Roman Pearl and Red Lion were in charge, but Te Money came with a great rattle, and beat Red Lion by a head. Roman Pearl weakened into third place two lengths away, with Monetize fourth. Sulla and Josie Melville were next, and then came Blue Spear, Good Boy, Camp Prince, Zane Grey, Haviland, Furore, and Lucklaine.
Omana Handicap Vallar proved to be the best of good things for the Omana Handicap, and for favourite returned a fine price. He carried £470, with good support also for Lunette £421, Partial Eclipse £359 and Air King £335. Miss Potoa was badly left. Partial Eclipse began best from Hone Heke, Lunette. Bulolo, Winsome Boy, Catapult, Abbey Queen, Killute and Air King. Vallar took command at the end of a couple of furlongs and showed the way into the straight from «Partial Eclipse, Bulolo, Air King, Abbey Queen, Winsome Boy and a bunch which included Liaison, the last-named being off the course at the turn. Vallar easily held his own up the straight to beat Bulolo by a couple of lengths, with Partial Eclipse and Abbey Queen in close order two lengths back. Winsome Boy was fifth, and theh came Catapult, Taneriri, Lunette, Diamond Queen, Killute and Liaison. Kirikopuni Hurdles A six-horse field with one dividend came out in the Kirikopuni Hurdles, Mangani £961 being a warm favourite, with good money also for the Clock-work-Mangaiti bracket £603 and Pekatahi £ 571Clockwork made the pace, leading past the post the first time from Mangaiti, Mangani, Fane, Harbour View and Pekatahi. Down the back there was little change in the order, but Fane dropped out of the contest. Turning for home Clockwork had a slight advantage over Mangani, with Mangaiti, Pekatahi and Harbour View in close order. The favourite did not fence too cleverly over the two last fences, but managed to beat Harbour View by a neck, with Clockwork and Mangaiti practically on terms a couple of lengths away. Pekatahi was next and Fane tailed off. Juvenile Handicap Eleven paraded for the Juvenile Handicap, and in a good pool a big favourite was found in Love Call, who carried £1,591, and incidentally held the number one marble. Others to come in for support were Awamutu £BB7, and the Carl Idem—Valorous bracket £872. At the start Imperial Prince was left altogether, and Professor, Norval Tea and Anom were hopelessly left. Awamutu got away brilliantly, leading out from Praetor, Love Call, Valorous and Carl Idem. Love Call was a length behind Awamutu at the home turn, With Valorous, Cur.rajong, Anom and Carl Idem in close order another four lengths away. Awamutu held his own in the run liome and beat the favourite by two lengths. Eight lengths back were Carl Idem and Currajong together, deadheating for third, and then came Anom, Praetor and Professor. President’s Handicap All but Golden Wedding contested the President’s Handicap, and the first day’s winner, Royal Doulton, was made a firm favourite, being entrusted with £1,340, while there was good support for Branson, £964, King Emerald £724, Hyde Park. £719, and Flying Juliet, £644. Flying Juliet and King Emerald, on the inside j)ositions. began best, being chased out by Hyde Park, Thursby, Papatu, Master Doon, and Branson, the favourite actually being the last away. Passing the seven furlongs Flying Juliet and King Emerald held command from Hyde Park, Mas-
ter Doon, Branson, Sleepy Sol, Lomint, Papatu, Thursby, and Sir Archie, with Siaosi and Royal Boulton the last two. Tho latter made a move in the back stretch, and was lying- fifth as they started to file across 4 he top. Flying Juliet, and King Emerald were the first to turn for home, with Hyde Park, Branson, Royal Doulton, and Lomint handy, and Sir Archie, Master Boon, and Sleepy Sol following. Flying Juliet was in front at the distance, but had a great tussle over the last bit with Hyde Park, who pushed up on the rails, and the former won by half a head. Thursby was two and a-half lengths away third, just in front of Emerald, and then came Papatu, Branson, Siaosi, Royal Boulton, Sir Archie, and Sleepy Sol. with Lomint last.- The first couple of furlongs took
25 3-5. and the first five LI 4-5, the full journey occupying 1.40. Ruawai Handicap Awarere and Oration declined their engagements in the sprint, the Ruawai Handicap, leaving nine runners, with Aussie drawn on the outer, but he was favourite with £ 1,332, Lady’s Roy carrying £1,009 and The Fox £9OS at the head of the other quotations. Yaqui and Serang were slow off the mark, Billikins and Lady’s Boy hitting the front early from Ballymov 11., The Fox, Aussie, The Lamb and Yaqui. Crossing the top the first two were half a dozen lengths in front of Aussie, but at the straight entrance this margin was reduced to half by Aussie. Below the ditsance Billikins and Lady’s Boy were fighting it out, but they were pretty well done, and Aussie soon gathered them in to go on and score convincingly by two lengths from Lady’s Boy, with Rillikins three lengths back, half a length in front of ’The Lamb. Ballymoy 11. was fifth, and Yaqui, Scat and Serang next. The win was a most popular one. Hoanga Handicap Fourteen came out for the hack mile, best backed being Maori Boy £l,l7i>, Tidal £ 1,056, Grand Tea £617 and Eager Rose £519. Brampton was lelt a few lengths at the start, Bizarro and War Officer leading out from Maori Boy, Nassock, Winsome Boy, Princess Rain and Respirator, the last three at the end of a couple of furlongs being Tidal, Bouble Mint and Brampton. Bizarro and War Officer held command right round to the home turn, their nearest attendants there being Winsome Boy, Grand Tea, Princess Rain, Template and Bouble Mint, with Tidal still third to last. Half a furlong from home Maori Boy, Winsome Boy and Grand Tea were in line, when Tidal came with a rush and finished under the judge’s box a head in front of Maori Boy, with Nassock a similar distance away, and Winsome Boy right up. Next were Glenstar, Grand Tea, War Officer, Bouble Mint, Brampton and Eager Rose. Finlayson Memorial Handicap Lomint was the only withdrawal from the concluding event, the Bonald Finlayson Memorial Handicap, and in the usual last race big pool Golden Wedding £1,209, Stormy £1,185 and Auriculus £ 924 carried most investments.. At the start Golden Weddingcannoned into Stormy and Eh Timi, and all lost ground. Schorr went to the front early from Auriculus, Cynthia N, King Smock, The Thorn and Wenday. At the six furlongs. Auriculus went to the front and led round to the home turn from Schorr, Golden Wedding, Cynthia N, Eh Timi, King Smock and Wenday, with Stormy last. A great race ensued up the stretch Golden Wedding and Schorr deadheating, with the fast-finishing Stormy only a neck away—a good thing beaten. Auriculus was fourth, and then came Cynthia N, Wenday, The Thorn, Eli Timi and King Smock. Later results are: KIRIKOPUNI HURDLES Of £175; 1J ipiles 1 vlr AN J? AJ i l Ll - Bra dney and F.
