GOOD DISPLAY GIVEN BY PONSONBY ELEVEN

ELLERSLIE “OFF COLOUR” Although not the top-scorer, Spicer gave perhaps the soundest exhibition of solid all-round batting for Ponsonby against Ellerslie on Saturday. Only a colt, and still with a heap of confidence to gain, this player, as one of the opening batsmen,, hit everything sent down to him, and hit it hard. Possessing a pleasing forward drive and a cut or two that he knows just how to execute, he played brightly to hit up 25 in a very short while. It was at this stage he misjudged one of Baxter’s deceptive looking leg breaks, and was sent away. Barnes and Innes, with 45 and 40 respectively, were the top scorers. Both know* how to treat loose balls, and their treatment of the stray stuff was zestful if anything. Nicklin and Robertshaw contributed 19 each, with nice placing, before the former went to Lawrence and the latter to Matthews with two good balls. Ellerslie is suffering from a paucity of good fieldsmen. Those out in the field on Saturday could not exactly be termed incapable, as they made no attempts to keep the scoring down. Gedye was once an enterprising mid - off—now it seems as if he “doesn’t mind in the least!” Baxter and Lawrence handled all of Ellerslie’s heavy work, the former, including the hat-trick. took five wickets for 58 runs, while the latter took three for 62. Ponsonby finished its innings with ISB on the book. Ellerslie made an uninteresting opening. Y'ates hit four, then pushed one into Nicklin’s hands off Barnes. Gedye, in hitting out hard for 17, showed a trace of his old self* but went to an easy one from Mackie. H. Burton endeavoured to put an end to the funny business and went hunting properly to get 27 before Mackie caught and bowled him. The two following batsmen made five between them. At “stumps” Hollis had made 8 not out. The afternoon’s play closed with Ellerslie five wickets down for 81, as against Ponsonby’s 188. Details; PONSONBY. First Innings.
