High Carnival at Devonport

BIG SPORTS PROGRAMME FOR UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF A lar 9e crowd of interested and highly amused spectators at Devonport on Saturday watched the first exhibition of push ball in the seaside suburb. Foresters strove with Druids, League footballers met Rugbyites in a Herculean endeavour, and a representative team from H.M.S. Veronica challenged all-cbmers. Contesting for th© control of the sft diameter sphere proved more strenuous than was imagined, and perspiring players heaved and pushed with might and main, while supporters roared themselves hoarse. Not the least interesting feature was the sight of Mr. Alex Harris, M.P., coatless and hatless, “pushing” for the Foresters’ Lodge, of which he is a Past Chief Ranger. The struggle between Rugby and League was the most keenlv sustained. and despite frantic efforts, neither side managed to get the big ball across the scoring line. The spell ended within a few yards of the line to which Rugby was, heading, but dog-tired Leaguers grimly held the ball down on the ground, while an equally exhausted set of Rugbyites tries in vain to move it. The referee had some difficulty in preventing supporters of the teams from rushing in to “give a pound.” The Foresters defeated Druids by two points to niL Veronica pushed down the Devonport Band by six points to nil, and the Rugby v. League game was a draw, with no score. Some fine sprint racing was witnessed. In the 100 yards race for the championship of Devonport, the first heat went to Messrs. L. Scott and Townsend; the second to Messrs. Giles and Jones; the final was won by Scott, Giles being second. Other results are as follow: 100 Yards (for footballers).—Townsend (6yds). 1; W.
