HOP TO JAVA
HURLEY MAY START TO-DAY USING INSTRUMENTS FROM SOUTHERN CROSS (United P.A. — By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY, Friday. Captain Hurley and Flying-Oflicers Moir and Owen landed in the monoplane Spirit of Australia last night at Daly Waters. They left there again at 6.20 a.m. to-day. South Australian time, and covered the last Australian stage of their preliminary flight (300 miles), landing at Wyndham, on the north coast of Western Australia, at 9.45 a.m., Western Australian time. If the weather is favourable to-morrow the airmen will leave on their 1,600 miles’ hop to Andir. Java. Their trip to England and back will be attempted from Wyndham.
The Spirit of Australia is carrying several instruments borrowed from the Southern Cross. In addition to the big monoplane’s earth induction compass. Captain Hurley’s plane is using its engine lubricators. His own lubricators will not reach Sydney until some time this month, and these will be made available for the Southern Cross if needed.
