LABOUR’S GAINS
MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS IN ENGLAND COMMUNISTS REJECTED (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (United Service) Reed. 1.0 p.m. LONDON, Friday. The final returns in the municipal elections in 80 of the largest cities and boroughs outside London show many Labour gains, mainly from Conservatives, with a triple success in the Home Secretary's constituency, the Twickenham division of Middlesex. There Labour gained its initial representation. Details of the gains and losses are as follow: LONDON
A feature of the elections was the rejection of the Communist candidates. Only 27 votes were recorded for them at Bradford. 32 at Blackburn and 110 at Wolverhampton. The Labour gains were mostly in the industrial centres. Labour's biggest success was at Liverpool, where the party had 11 gains, yet it secured the control of only, one council, namely, that of Swindon.
Mr. Corbey. Labour Mayor of Salford who refused to wear a top hat in his year of office or to attend church on Mayors’ Sunday, was defeated by 100 votes. Six unemployed men were candidates for the Southwark Council- They secured only 252 votes among them.
