TAURANGA TOPICS At a meeting of the Tauranga Hospital Board a statement showed that the costs for maintenance was considerably higher than the average of this grade of hospital. A committee was set up to investigate the matter. , , . The question of hospital boards having authority to make a preferential charge in favour of contributors to district nurse funds was discussed and it was resolved that a remit on the subject be sent to the Hospitals Board Association. Messrs. Robbins, Lochhead and Hume were appointed to wait upon the Minister of Health at Hamilton in reference to the subject.
The Tauranga Harbour Board’s monthly meeting was held on Thursday, Mr. D. Grant, chairman, presiding. Mr. Plummer, Te Puna Point, wrote offering to reclaim 26 acres of swamp on the foreshore, if he were granted a lease. It was decided to grant a 21 years’ lease. The Regatta Club was granted the usual privileges of the use of the wharf, etc., for their annual regatta. The engineer’s engagement having expired, and as there are no urgent works in hand or projected, it was decided not to renew the engagement. A vacancy having occurred by a member’s non-attendance for four successive meetings, the County Council has been asked to fill the vacancy.
ROTORUA AFFAIRS There was a good attendance at the fortnightly meeting of the Rotorua Orphans’ Club on Thursday evening. Bro. W. A. McLean presided. It was decided to hold a ladies’ night on November 8. A vote of sympathy was passed to Bro. E. La Trobe, on the death of his father. The musical programme was arranged by Bro. H. J. Sanders. Items were given by Messrs. F. Newmarch, P. Basham, F. Baker (Auckland), D. Weir, S. Andrews and H. J. Sanders. Accompaniments were played by Bro. H. J. F. Heley and Bro. S. Andrews. * T * The Mayor, Mr. J. N. McLean, welcomed the visiting members of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers on their arrival in Rotorua on Thursday. Later they were the guests of Mr. J. N. McLean and Mrs. McLean, at their residence. Yesterday morning, accompanied by the Mayor and members of the Borough Council, they were taken over the Whakarewarewa forestry nurseries and adjacent plantation. The following members of the Auckland Provincial Branch of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers are attending the conference: Messrs. W. A. Gray, F. E. Powell, I. C. Jeffrey. A. C. Walker, A. HOWICK TOWN BOARD The Howick Town Board met on Thun* day evening. The clerk reported the receipt of £ ■ from the Auckland City Council, as th« board’s quarterly proportion of the heavy traffic fees. The building inspector reported th a: permits to the value of £1,145 had been issued for October. In response to representations for - revaluation of the district, the elerk rtported that the work is now in progress. Owing to the state of the finance, maintenance work throughout the district has been stopped.
