Gossip’s Sting

Stars Become Annoyed with Magazine Writers

BITTER FEELING ROUSED

Hollywood's sensitive soul has been rubbed a trifle raw of late by the frank and airy chatter of gossip and magazine writers. Film people take themselves very seriously, and these gentle literary breezes have become chilling draughts indeed.

Recently a writer who had made a few amusing remarks in print on Lita Grey Chaplin was given a stinging rebuke by that much-advertised young lady, says an exchange. The note of reproof that Lita wrote ended: “I can only conclude that your entertainment at my home the several

times you visited me has been insufficient or inadequate.” Art and Domesticity Still another miscarriage of wellmeant Press comment happened to a writer who, in the home of a celebrated star, ‘ admired the married sister-in-law, and mentioned in his column that the sister-in-law was a. likely candidate for film honours if she should desire a career.

The star’s brother, who is of a volatile temperament became highly incensed and demanded to know why some • reporter should try to inject ambition for a career into his contented wife, and try to break up his happy home? A Major Eruption Another writer mentioned a few sentimental friendships between some of the older women stars and young leading men. Claire Windsor and Buddy Rogers, Vir-

ginia Valli and Charles Farrell, and Ona Brown, former wife of Clarence Brown, the director, and her young men escorts were mentioned. This produced a major eruption in the form of a defensive article by a local magazine.

Since then the older actresses have been most circumspect about the cafes, with Claire and Buddy breaking off their partying about, and Ona Brown getting engaged to one of her young men. Another article with pictures showing snappy love scenes between famous stars in films, brought down a hornet’s nest about the mild writer’s ears. Five different stars registered prolonged howls over their inclusion in the picture layout under such a title.
