BARRIER MAN’S CRIME

FIVE YEARS’ REFORMATIVE GOOD RECORD TARNISHED Sentence of five years’ reformative detention was passed by Mr. Justice Blair in the Supreme Court this morning on Robert William Bailey, aged 56, who had pleaded guilty to four charges of carnal knowledge. For prisoner, Mr. F. D. McLiver said accused had lived all his life at Great Barrier in virtual seclusion. He had made a straight-out statement of the offences. He had every reason to believe the girl was over 16. Counsel put in a plea by a number of residents of the island, stating that prisoner had born© an excellent character. “This is the only break in a long and honourable career,” counsel concluded. “A case like this causes me much earnest thought,” said Mr. Justice Blair. “The crime is a very grave one, and I have a duty to the public, yet I am averse from sending to gaol a man with so blameless a record in the past.”
