SMOKELESS FUEL
Sir, — In a recent issue of The Sun there was a cable stating that the New Zealand Railway Department had ordered 500,000 tons of smokeless fuel. I take this to mean coal or a product of coal. I understand that it has been stated that the policy of the Government is to foster local industries, and that it was the intention to use all the New Zealand coal possible. If so, is this consistent with the cable news, or does it mean that there is not enough suitable coal in New Zealand for the purpose of the Railway Department? There has been a revival in local shares lately—perhaps partly due to the idea that the Government would be a big customer. It was stated at the meeting of the local owners’ association at Wellington that business in coal has been hard hit by the competition of electric power, oil fuel and the importation of Newcastle coal, and that the mines are working short time. The Renown mine is now producing and another is being floated. Can you tell me where the market is to be found for all this extra production, and do you think that the contract first entered into by the Government is in the best interests of the people of New Zealand? A.H.C.
