GIFT TO MARINES

SOCCER TROPHY FROM U.S. GENE TUNNEY TO PRESENT IT Gene Tunney, who was recently gazetted a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, will present to the British Royal Marines a beautiful football trophy on December 10. He will make the presentation in London, on behalf of the American marines, who wish to return the courtesy shown by the “Leathernecks” —as the Royal Marines are called in the States —in presenting the United States corps with “Private Pagett,” the bulldog mascot. Green, Marble, and Silver The trophy itself is 23 inches high, its base being hewn out of green Vermont marble. The centre piece is a ' huge silver bowl supported on a silver column fitted into a bronze cap, which covers the marble base. On one side of the bowl is the coat of arms of the Royal Marines, and on the other side the arms of the United States Marine Corps. On the base of the trophy are the figures of two footballers, which are copied from original models by Cianfarani, the Italian sculptor. The trophy will be brought to England by one of the three retired “medal of honour” men who served in the Great War. It will be competed lor by the Association football teams of the Royal Marines.
