A QUIET WEEK

TRADE IN PRODUCE CHEAPER POTATOES November 2. 9 a.m. Trade in grain, seed and produce circles Has been quiet over the week, with no line giving cause for outstanding concern. Stocks of onions remain low. A small parcel from Australia was landed this week, but the quality generally is not good, and it is not expected that any more will be lande.d from that quarter until the new season’s Globes are available from Melbourne. These were offered around the city during the week for arrival here about November 20 at a price that would make the through store Quotation somewhere in the vicinity of 27s 6d to 30s a cwt. On account of the high pfice and the risk of deterioration during shipment, however, only limited bookings have been made. There are still, no signs of cheap onions in Auckland until the latter end of December when, according to forward quotation indications, onions will be available at somewhere around 18s 6d a cwt, through store Auckland. At the moment onions are selling in the marts at 37s 6d a case or bag. Merchants’ through store quotations range up to 40s. Old Potatoes Not Wanted

Stocks of old season’s potatoes are practically exhausted on the spot, and the demand has almost ceased. In the marts where sales rank into over 200 bags a day only a few bags move out a day at the present rate. The new season’s tubers are coming forward more freely and the price is gradually falling to a level where the housewife will be able to act with greater freedom. On rail, Pukekohe. quotations yesterday were steady around 21s a cwt. In the marts the tubers were selling at from 2d to 3d a lb, according to size and quality. Old potatoes are available at from 8s to 12s a cwt, according to quality. Maize Market Stationary

The maize market at the moment is lifeless. Limited quantities are still coming to hand from Gisborne, but Auckland merchants appear fairly -well situated in regard to immediate requirements and there is not much strength in th'e wholesale market. Through store, the yellow cereal is selling at up to 6s 6d a bushel. Prompt delivery quotations from Gisborne are still nominally unchanged at 5s 3d a bushel. v . . A slight firming in the Bay of Plenty market was noted yesterday, when 5s 4£d f.o.r. was generally asked for the few parcels available. It does not appear that there will be much life in the market now until after the Christmas holidays. Wheat is firm with spot qtiotaUons unchanged at from 7s 8d to 7s 9d through store. • , , , Oats meet with a steady demand at 4s 8d a bushel for E Gartons through store. A’s are 3d dearer. A further advance in Southern chaff quotations has taken place o\ er the week. Through store Auckland quotations are firm at £ 9 10s a- ton for best bright samples.
