FINE FIELDS AT AVONDALE AGAIN TO-MORROW

Royal Doulton Wins Handsomely

DARGAVILLE’S OPENING DAY

A FEATURE of the racing at Avondale yesterday was the splendid success scored by Royal Doulton in the Dargaville Cup. The sport throughout was interesting and exciting.

Owing to their own course underj going extensive alterations, permission was granted by the Avondale Jockey | Club to hold its annual meeting on j the suburban course. Racing was carj ried out under most favourable weather i conditions, and although an off-day, the attendance was good. The track j provided good going, being a bit on ■ the dead side. The totalisator staff handled £ 23,499 during the day, but only i £8,399 10s was put through on the cor- j i responding day last year, when the club held its meeting on its own ground. The increase for the day i represented £15,099 10s. Xotes on the later races and detailed results are given below. Toka Toka Handicap 1 Catapult spi4ng a big surprise in 1 the Toka Toka Handicap, and returned a dividend of over a score. Liaison ; £448 was a good favourite, while there 'was money for Winsome Roy £335. I Partial Eclipse £3lB and Miss Mercia | £294. At the start Little Gift and | Princess Electra were badly left, the ; latter throwing her rider. Vallar begen brilliantly with Catapult, the pair being followed by Hone Heke, Air King, Liaison, Exalted and Miss Mercia. At the half-mile Vallar was in charge from Catapult, the pair turning for home in front of Air King, Bulolo, Exalted, Abbey Queen, Miss Potoa, Hone Heke and Liaison. Over the last bit Catapult and Air King had a set-to. the former going away to win by a length and a-ljalf, and there was a great tussle for second money. Air King just being in front of Maori Boy. Abbey Queen and Vallar. Bulolo was at the head of the others, with Grand Tea, Exalted. Partial Eclipse and Miss Mercia next. Kaihu Hurdles All came out for the Kaihu Hurdles. Mangani £559 being a good first choice, and he won well at the end. Best backed of the remainder were Quincoma £545 and Piet £331. Miss Alma made the early running from Clockwork, Mangani, Harbour View, Master Clements, Quincoma and Piet. Down the back Quincoma fell. Miss ' Alma and Clockwork having a good j '

lead, with Mangani, Piet and Harbour View following. Mangani and Clockwork were together in the straight, clear of Miss Alma, with Piet well back. Mangani was all out to beat Clockwork by a couple of lengths. Mangaiti finishing well in third place, four lengths away. Harbour View was three lengths back, four lengths in advance of Piet, with Master Clements following. Miss Alma fell at the second to last fence. Nursery Handicap Of the dozen runners in the Xursery, three had their chances ruined at the start, Norval Tea, Awamutu and Anom, the first two taking no part in the race. Love Call £727, the Carl Idem-Valorous bracket £453, Buying Prince £412 and Awamutu £407 was the order of betting. Gemlight began quickly from Flying Prince, and at the end of a furlong Flying Prince, Gemlight and Currajong were making play from Carl Idem, Love Call (who was badly interfered with here). Gigolo, Bennie and Imperial Prince. Into the home j stretch Flying Prince, Gemlight and Currajong were in a line, with Love ; Call, Carl Idem and Bennie next, the ! last-named running wide. Carl Idem finished strongly, but Gemlight fought it out, the former winning by a head, with the unlucky Love Call three parts of a length away third. Flying Prince was fourth, and Currajong fifth, fol- i lowing them being Gigolo, Imperial ; Prince, Bennie and Valorous, with Anom last. . Dargaville Cup All eleven acceptors were paraded for the Bargaville Cup, a firm favourite being found in Besert Glow £679, with good money also for Valkon £ 666, and Papatu £541. Royal Boulton and Sir Russell led out of the straight from Alonsoa, Master Boon, Papatu. Valkon, Mint Leaf and Sir Archie. Entering the back stretch Sir Russell was clear, being attended by Papatu, Valkon, Master Boon, Royal Boulton, Besert Glow, Sir Archie, Alonsoa and Mint Leaf, with Golden Wedding and Thursby the last pair. Running to the five furlongs the field began to bunch, and Sir Russell led across the top from Valkon, this pair being the first to turn for home, with Royal Boulton, Papatu, Besert Glow, Sir Archie and Mint Leaf all handy. Sir Russell was the first beaten, and just ; below the distance .Royal Boulton shot to the front, and never gave anything else a chance, winning by tw# lengths. Mint Leaf finished fast and just failed by a head to beat Papatu for second money, and Besert Glow was right up fourth. Valkon was only another neck away, and then came Alonsoa, Sir Archie. Golden Wedding and Master Boon, with Thursby and Sir Russell the last two. On a dead track the race was run at a decidedly smart pace. The first quarter occupied 26 3-5. the half-mile 52 3-5, six furlongs 1.18. and the final four furlongs a smart 50. Avoca Handicap Four defections left a field of j thirteen in the sprint, the Avoca Handicap, and Aussie was made a warm favourite with £751, there being a good drop to Flying Juliet £341. The Begum £324, Billikins £297 and Lady’s Boy £226. It was a fine start. Billikins being the first to show out from Hyde Park, Yaqui, Serang, The Lamb, The Begum, and Aussie. At the end of a,couple

iof furlongs Billikins was making play • from The Begum, Lady’s Boy, Oration. Aussie, The Lamb. Ballymoy n Serang. Flying Juliet. Branson and Yaqui. Turning for home Billikins. From j the distance Aussie and Lady’e Boy drew out. and after a sharp duel the i latter bested the crack to win by j nearly two lengths. Oration was a I similar distance away, just in front of Hyde Park, Branson and The Lamb, i with Scat. Billikins. Ballymoy IL and j Yaqui following. Awakino Hack Handicap Of the thirteen runners in the Awakino Hack there was good support for War Officer £576, Tidal £563. Eager Rose £306 and Mountain Guide £2sr. Passing the five furlongs Bizarro and Eager Rose still held command, being followed by Glenstar. Template. Respirator. Xassock. Salamander and Tidal. There was little between Eager Rose. Bizarro and Xassock as they turned for home. Glenstar and Template following, with Tidal making a run on the rails. There was a great race home from the distance, first Eager Rose and then Tidal beinfc in front, but the latter finished best to win by a length and a-half from Eager Rose, with Glenstar a length back, and Template a good fourth. Xext were Respirator. War Officer. Bizarro, Xassock, Mountain Guide and Salamander. Hobson Handicap All started in the concluding event, and in a good pool there was big support for King Smock £7BO, and Schorr £670, with big drops to Ohinemuri £403 and Auriculus £355. Loraint got away best on the inside position, from a beautiful start, being followed out by King Smock, Cynthia N, Eh Timi, The Thorn. Ohinemuri, Schorr and Wenday. At the five furlongs Cynthia X was making the pace, being

clear of Lomint and The Thorn, with Eh Timi, King .Smock, Ohinemuri. Schorr and Wenday next in order. Cynthia X was still in command at the turn. Lomint, Eh Timi, King Smock. Wenday, Auriculus, Ohinemuri and Judge’s Box being in that order with Stormy still last. Thursday. The following is a list of the horses left in the Victorian Derby, of £5.000, which is to be run at Flemington on Saturday:—Yodelist, Balmerino. Cimbrian, Kavalli, Oatendale, Prince Humphrey, Ramulus, Strephon, Strogoff, Gay Mutineer, Happy Warrior.

DETAINED "\rANY risks- are taken in these last races, when everybody is generally in a hurry to get away home. And they get away with it, too. There was an outstanding case in the Hobson Handicap that would have been all the better for the glare of an inquiry, a horse j that should have been better backed than he was making a really poor show until the race was practically over. Under the present system of racing control fliere will never be a change for the better, for disqualifications can apparently be reversed without much difficulty. There was more than one case yesterday at Avondale, where backers did their money in cold ; blood, and doubtless we will see a | similar state of affairs to-morrow. I Verb sap.
