ON FOOT INTO WASTES

WILKINS CABLES PLANS ESTABLISHING BASE FOR FLIGHT (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 10.25 a.m. LONDON, Wed. Sir Hubert Wilkins cabled from Port Stanley on Tuesday: “We bade good-bye to civilisation when the Hektoria to-day sailed from the Falkland Islands, the last port of call, toward the Antarctic’s scarcely-charted seas. “The next landing point will be Deception Island on the northern edge of the unexplored ice continent, where we will go to find a harbour and to discharge our equipment, including the airplanes. We will move on foot into the wastes in order to establish a base, probably well within the Antarctic Circle. “All members of the expedition are in splendid condition.”
